o,
We have received an offer from Aramco in Dhahran. We just wanted to know what is the difference between houses in the main community and in Dhahran hills, as well as the new Jebel heights. We also wanted to know if anyone has any idea how apartments inside the compound compare to the houses.

Main Camp is closest to the office area and this is where the school and the largest of the commissaries are located. Main Camp houses vary a lot and come in all sizes. Hills is further out and Jebel Heights is even further out. Jebel Heights houses are among the largest, but you may find larger houses in Main Camp, and there is a Jebel Heights Commissary + gym in the area.
Everyone has their own taste, some find Main Camp the coziest; some prefer Jebels, and some like the balance of the Hills.

I’m afraid you’ll mostly have no say in your initial housing but can bid on other housing after two years based grade code and years of service (get in line system). I’m in the same boat. I’ll be arriving last of Oct or beg of Nov as Bach. I expect I’ll be in mango/mint area or jebel apartment’s McShane is referring to. I’m a rehire and lived off of mango for a couple months in 2008. At that time, the Bach pads were dated, small but clean. However, that was nearly 15 years ago, so I expect the units are even more dated if they haven’t been majorly updated. There was a mini mart near mango, which was nice and convenient. Not sure, if it is still there? I’ll convert to fam status for fam of 3 in Feb or Mar, then will be assigned a two bedroom home(hopefully not a two bedroom jebel apt).

There are gyms near. The mini mart is still open, plus there is the Heights commissary.

Are there differences quality and maintenance of family houses that are in pet communities versus not pet communities? I ask because while I am allergic to dogs and cats, I did promise my kids a doodle-mix puppy (IF the Kennel Club has such a breed to purchase/ adopt). If it’s not possible, then we won’t be needing a pet friendly house anyways.
Also, is Dharan Hills the likely neighborhood for families whose children attend Dharan Elementary and Dharan Middle? Or will it likely be in Main Camp?
I read that almost all the houses are 220 volt, has anyone had a problem using a plug converter (from 110 volt in US to 220) for their small appliances or a transformer?
Thanks!

I don’t think there are any designated pet communities, you get assigned your house based on the humans arriving, not pets. They didn’t ask us if we had dogs or not, my neighbours don’t have dogs, I think over the road has a cat. The Kennel club is the vets, grooming etc. They don’t breed or sell dogs as far I know.. The Hills is where most new families seem to go, but there are buses to and from the schools.

I appreciate you reading my questions and response! These days, do most families forgo the long shipping of personal items, appliances and furniture? And just use the allowance to buy once on compound? Or is there a very active FOR SALE intranet, or maybe it’s Facebook?

Yes there is an active classifieds aramco internal site plus the Facebook pages. Best bet is to buy over here as freight costs are extremely expensive in the current market and your $allowance may not cover the full costs

As McShane said, plus there is IKEA, Home Centre nearby and online.
We always ship but did not this time, there is an ease to having furniture that fits the space you have.
