The new company officially starts Feb 1-2, hopefully they will release more information soon after. From what we're being told all new hires will be through the new company and not under Aramco, thus they will have different pay and benefit packages. For those of us already here we will remain Aramcons for 2-3 years at which time we will either receive an offer from the JV or sent home. The criteria for who will stay and who will go has not been addressed.
Short answer, we are all still in the dark (both current employees and applicants).

@bcd. Sent you which has same info as just posted on forum. We all are waiting and also I think May be new management decides to have new interviews. If JV stars in February 1 then they might take few weeks to understand the service before deciding on employment issues. Let's see what happens. Let's keep up......... each other via this forum. Just an update, I received an email from AOC recently stating that the joint venture will commence in Feb 2014 and that more details regarding job interviews and subsequent offer details and timescales will be made available after this.

I have interviewed for a JH position and received an offer. Very slow going though. Recruiter and relo advisor seem uninformed. I was concerned about living on Rakah and raised the issue. Frankly, I just don't need the job badly enough to make such a drastic lifestyle change. They said they'd look into it. Now, I'm hearing they're moving Americans from Rakah to Dhahran due to tax implications they'd not considered. Can anyone confirm this?

Why would Rakkah or DH make a difference in taxes? Both are Aramco compounds, both in Saudi Arabia, only 15-20 minutes apart from each other (Depending on traffic). I can understand issues with schooling, activities, work, spouse, etc but no idea why it would affect taxes....

Im a physician from US. Per my recent inquiry with the recruiter from Houston, I was also told to check back in March as all is on hold till then.... Has anyone been told if future hires/applying/correspondences will be through ASC or from section of the venture?

Well, for one, Dhahran is a company-owned compound. From what I've been told, Rakah is leased and not company owned. If you're familiar with the American IRS, a small technicality like that can make a big difference.

xjonsey, I heard of such move from one more source. Someone from US payroll, who joined few weeks ago living in Rakkah, had been asked to select from a few homes in Dhahran and move due to tax reasons emanating from tax treaty lingo.

What if Dhahran is really really full and there is absolutely no house available and the Americans are not allowed to stay in Rakah? Will it mean that they will be moved to Abqaiq?

Would these US tax implications only affect American expats living in Rakah or would other expats face similar issues?

Only U.S. employees are affected because of agreements between governments. U.S. citizens with Aramco must live on company property, because Rakah is leased it was not accepted. Aramco thought it would be ok because they lease it. They were told no. Dhahran is full. What few houses that are in need of renovation will probably be fast tracked (my opinion). Having tile in the houses actually will help with that since carpets are usually (note usually) replaced between residents.
I do not know the timeline for how quickly they are having to move off Rakah. There were only 5 or 6 houses available for many more families. The families were given the list, had so many days to look at the houses and then they bid on them.
Aramco is scrambling so the company does not have to pay 2013 tax penalties for those residents. There is no way to know what they will have to do to meet whatever deadlines they may have.

Dhahran has many houses that are empty but housing says they are for Emergency housing only, which mean they have been empty for a long time. There is two houses accross the street that have been empty for over four years and others down the street that have not been used since my neighbors have been here and that has been over 8 years. This is what you have to deal with when coming here, so it's best to be prepared and try to be very, very, very patient when dealing with the locals. To get the smallest thing done it takes moving heaven and earth, but you get used to it after a while. Just remember to keep your chin up and that you are there for the money.

There are three family-size townhouses being renovated just in my one neighborhood of Dhahran Hills alone. There are always units being cleared out, renovated, etc.
