I am planning to push the envelope and ask for 250K base + other perks in case they came back to me with an offer. I am not really crazy about sacrificing my job here and the level of experience and challenge I am getting here; I believe the compensation has to be stratospheric to make really consider this opportunity. As you guys already mentioned in your previous threads, I can always jump on a Silicon valley company and get a better pay without sacrificing the level of experience and the scale of AI /ML projects that I am on now.
Still waiting for the offer , I decided not to reach to the HR agent first and wait until she comes back to me with an initial offer first.
Please feel free to share your thoughts and opinions , I am learning a lot from the experts on this forum.
Thank you in advance!!

If you don't mind asking, Why are you still on a 175K CAD job if you can get a much higher silicon valley job In your field? Why even interview for Aramco? They are not that strong in your field. You are in your mid-career level, where you will benefit from working with a more specialized employer. In my opinion, don't sacrifice your career if you feel you can get something better in US

Hey asra , it is a valid question and thank you for sharing your thoughts. I am happy to answer this one gladly!! My employer is American (Huge AI Consulting company), but for Canadian citizens, we get lower rates than the US, around 30% difference because of conversion rate and currency difference. The same role in the states is open for 220k base + incentives, however , the fact that I have been with them only for 8 months now, I am not allowed to ask for a transfer. So On August, I will be eligible to move to the state internally within my company and that will open the market for me. As you know now, Silicon Valley is not a great place to be in with all these layoffs , my company laid off 19000 jobs yesterday, (Not to mention Google laid off 20% of his workforce, Amazon 15%, Facebook 25% and Twitter more than 40%) and I was lucky to be among the pople leading few projects now. For instance, say that I accepted an offer in California, that's 40% taxes on my income (so close to Quebec), plus the cost of living there is crazy, so if you are getting 600k for your total package, that's in reality 350K that you are bringing back home. I also was interviewed for EY (Ernest & Young) in Maryland, and they are willing to sponsor me on a visa , but things are getting delayed because of the economic situation.

I don’t mean to be disrespectful, but would advise level setting the expectation. Your experience seems to be excellent, but is yet mid-level. McGill or Concordia aren’t top 50 that would make the degree stand out on its own. Besides, Silicon Valley doesn’t pay $700k for data scientists. US$175k is a good proxy for US comp for this profile (15 years experience in machine learning) at places like Accenture or IBM for example, unless in senior management or sales. I would expect base comp similar to your present. This is just my opinion, and obviously only you and the company can negotiate the comp. Good luck in negotiating, and hope it works for you.

Hi jagoul, I'm interested in following up with you as I'm also one of the shortlisted candidates. Did you end up getting an offer as per your expectations?

Hi RedBlueWhite redbluewhite thank you for your honest feedback and there is no disrespect here at all, I know as a canadian data scientist I am competing against the top notch universities in California such as Stanford or Berkley , however , the years of experience and the domain of expertise I have it is competetive in terms of the specialization (I work in computer vision domain) I also have experience in other domains of Machine learning. I worked for General Electric as a senior data scientist and currently I am data science manager at Accenture. So I hope that would give a better idea for the people in this thread to better estimate the base salary in this case , give the information discusses above. I am also 2x AWS certified (Machine learning and Data ytics Specialities), 2x Azure Microsoft certified and Databricks cerrtified. Given all the experience and the certificates that I have in the domain, the golden question becomes , is it still worth it to continue the process with an expectation of 180k base + other perks. And by the way , I got an invitation to a medical exam , I haven't received an official offer yet !! is it normal ? Thank you in advance for everyone here who are trying to help!!

Do you have an offer in writing yet? I’d not do anything medical wise until you have that offer.

That’s quite odd, usually the medical Is after the offer has been agreed. I suppose you don’t have much to lose in any case.

That's true and at this point honestly, I am not sure if I have to follow-up with HR on this , the two departments are quite disconnected

Generally speaking, Western education, K12 and post secondary, at all levels, along with work experience, carry weight and contribute towards your offer. However, as a Canadian myself, I can tell you that if you breakdown just your base salary, in Canadian dollars, your offer from Aramco could be in the range to 2x to 3x, otherwise, why would you consider, right? Also, as a non-resident Canadian, which should be declared within 12 months of moving to the CRA, you will NOT pay any taxes on income outside of Canada. As you know, taxation in Canada varies from 1/4 to 1/3 salary, depending on your salary, location, etc; so it's win win accepting an offer in Saudi VS Canada, especially from a taxation point of view.
