I Just got my visa and travelling to KSA by mid Sept. I was told that my air boxes will take a few weeks to arrive. I wanted to make sure that I absolutely carry necessary items together with me when i arrive. I had a few questions 1) Would there be basic crockery / pots and pans in the kitchen to start with on day 1? Or would i be required to go shopping on day 1 2) Do the houses come with basic bedding (bed sheet, pillows, comforter etc). 3) For how long would these basic items be continued to be provided>
Please don't hesitate to mention other items that you found in the house when you arrived. This will help me with my carry items.
Thanks AJP

Basic crockery / pots and pans, chinas, glasses, cups, utensils are provided. So are some basic food items, drinking water, soaps, detergents, towels. That should be enough supply for a few days.
If you arrive at night (as most people do), you'll likely need to have dinner. Just ask the driver to stop by to buy dinner at a restaurant on the way to the camp. We arrived at the airport ~10pm, left the airport ~1am. The only place still open near the camp was a KFC. We bought a family meal and brought it to the camp and ate dinner there.

Most of the people at Rakkah are westerners, and I would say that all have lived in a western society. The international mix is wonderfully diverse, from all continents. Certainly dress etc., is western, but I haven't seen anyone wearing anything too revealing . There are mosques along the road to Khobar, I would guess that the nearest one is about a kilometer away. I don't know about a mas, but then I haven't looked!

AJP,
We have been here just a week and I have to say that it has been a great transition. The staff are very friendly and helpful here and all the residents we have meet are great. We arrived at our house around 2am and they had supplied us with milk, bottled water, cereal, bread, cheese, peanut er, fruit, pots and pans (4), a knife set, and several other items. It got us thru day one for sure. The mini mart has enough things also that we have not had to go to one of the big grocery stores yet. I would say if you really love to cook bring at least one of your favorite pans. The ones they give you are just so so quality, no small fry pan either. They do not supply any type of pan to cook in the oven or larger mixing bowls so you may want to bring that as well. No microwave either. I did not mind the comforters they supplied but we did bring our own sheets, which a lot of people have suggested on this site, and I am very glad we did. They do supply several towels and hand towels but if you are picky about towels bring your own, again it is very nice to have but just so so quality. Internet and phone are already hooked up but no TV is supplied so we brought a small one as carry on until our larger ones come in sea shipment. Bring your own cable wires, the ones they gave us did not work with the tv we have. I find that the furniture is very comfortable and the homes have a great layout. Also, not sure where you are coming from but we ordered vonage before we left the states and brought a cordless phone with us and were able to call home immediately to family members. If I think of anything else I'll respond more, oh this is silly but I wish I had packed a pair of scissors. You can get a pair in the mini mart but I had so many back at home wish I had just thrown one or two in a suitcase. I think once they get all the activities started here and the camp fills up it will be a very desirable place to live. Safe travels.

I was wondering if anyone on this blog has a dog? Is there anywhere in Rakkah to take your dog for a run? Are there other dogs on the Rakkah compound currently? Thanks!

Hi
Did anyone use the dish barrel boxes? How was the experience of that with the airlines? Did you guys run into any problems with the boxes?
Also, space saver bags, does custom open them? If so, how do they put everything back in?
Hopefully, its wheels up on Sept 30 for me:)
Looking forward to meeting everyone...

Yes there are dogs in Rakkah. There is a grassy area down through the middle of the two rows of homes. Residents with dogs need to get together and ask for a dog run park.

Can you guys comment on drinking water at Rakkah? I know the water is sweet in the compound but should we still bring Brita / filters with us? Thanks

This depends on your preference. Some people prefer tap water, others prefer filtered, bottled water, etc.
The water as it is is fine for drinking. Compared to the water quality we used to have in Houston (Sugar Land), Rakkah is actually better (significantly softer).

In a previous post on this thread I read that there are dogs in Rakkah. We have a Golden Retriever and I would appreciate if any Rakkah resident with a medium/large dog could let me know how they manage without a fenced backyard. Thanks in advance.

Hi Revive, We moved to Rakkah last Sunday. We were told by Dhahran camp middle school that kids will either bring their own lunch or could buy lunch from snack bar. The school will not provide the lunch.

katanga,
We will also be bringing a lab/terrier mix and are curious about this issue. I saw some others recommend that we ask for the area to be fenced which would be ideal.
