o All,
Been lurking on these boards for a while now and picked up loads of useful information but have a couple of questions I'd like to nail down for UK payroll G11+ employees. I will probably be based in the field for the working week and returning to a base camp (ABQ/ RT) weekends so am considering various married/single/home location options.
I know that family status employees can receive a housing allowance and stay off camp. Could they stay over in Bahrain and still receive the allowance? I believe some Aramcons do this but how do they get over the rule that the wife should be in Kingdom for 6 months to maintain married status?
I was alternatively wondering if bachelor (single) status employees could also receive this allowance given the apparent housing shortages on some camps and lengthy commutes required (eg ABQ to DHA). This may be a workable option given I am away for the working week.

o mate,
I'm in a similar situation and due out (DH)end December. While my role is not classed as field based; the expectation is that I need to be getting among it, in order to carry out my role effectively. I'm coming out as a bachelor, initially, and will be looking at similar options instead of commuting from ABQ to DH when my family arrive in circa June 2013.
I understand that there is the housing allowance (gleaned from searches within this site) which seems equal to the sorts of rents (I've been googling) you can expect to incur within a reasonable striking distance to DH.
Worst case; I'm also considering the ABQ to DH commute with my own car. Anyone know what the commute time is camp gate to gate by car or if there is any car share schemes?

Mr Nibbles, the Abqaiq to Dhahran run can take as little as 45 mins in a car but is very variable depending on weather / accidents / road works etc. The Aramco bus is strictly limited to 50mph (I think) so can take up to 1 1/2 hours but more usually 1 hr+.
The driving experience is unpleasant and dangerous. Doubly so in the dark as Bedouin trucks may drive without lights. Camels can wander across the road at any time. Lorry drivers can be extremely aggressive. Many large 4x4's hurtle along at 140kph plus.
Defensive driving at all times is absolutely necessary which should include pulling well off the road during bad visibility regardless whether this will make you late. I drove in Saudi for 5 years and never had a serious incident but others had many close calls. If you are experienced driving elsewhere in the ME or (for example) Africa then you should adjust.
Hopefully someone else can chime in re car sharing as I can't help there. A pity nobody has been able to answer my original questions.
