All, Did anyone experience a stopover during their flight to Dammam? Is it feasible to do so with a lot of luggage checking out and checking in again? I am inclined to take a stopover but then at the same time having nightmares thinking about managing the luggage. Please share your thoughts?
Thanks

Not sure what other people have experienced, but for us, once you check your luggage at city of origin, you don't see it again until you reach Dammam. Just be sure that whatever you bring as hand luggage (carry-ons) is of manageable size and weight for maneuvering through airports and security lines, particularly if you have young children in tow. When you get to Dammam you'll go through passport control and then collect your checked baggage and clear customs.
This is our experience flying US/Frankfurt/Amsterdam/Dammam.

My tickets (with KLM) include one check-in trip only. All flights to Dammam have a stop-over either in Frankfurt, Amestrdam, or London. So I would say that is the norm.

I think I should have made my question clear! What I meant was taking a stopover of more than 24 hours. I would like visit my relatives lets say in London for two days. For this to happen I have to checkout my luggage and check back in again for the second leg of my journey to Dammam. This can be troublesome considering the fact that we will have a lot of luggage and kids:-). I would like to have your thoughts on it! Especially if somebody has done it before?

When we came over originally we stopped for 4 days in London. We left our luggage in the luggage stoe office that is in the airport and only took a suitcase with us that we'd packed for this stop and our carryons. We then went back to the airport, picked up all our luggage and proceeded to check in. That was in June 2001. I don't know if that is still an available option in the world of airport security now. I'd check online about the services available at the airport you would be flying into. Hope its still available for you! Safe Travels!

Apart from extra effort to collect bags and re-check them again, please consider the following points: (1) Checked baggage allowance for flights originating or terminating to USA is typically higher. When you try to re-check your bags from (say) UK, you may be required to pay for the extra weight. (2) Aramco will definitely prefer you to take a direct route without stopover. You will be on the payroll the day you board the plane from USA. Please check with you relocation advisor if they allow 2 days stopover.
Goodluck.

That is correct, we did have to pay excess baggage fees that we would not have had to pay going straight through. Today those fees are steep.

Thanks a lot Vpainter and SugarlandTX those are indeed great points to look into. I will check with the Airport authorities and also confirm with my relocation advisor. Once again thanks very much for the great replies!

You can stop over but your hire date will be the day you actually board the flight to fly directly to Dammam whereever that is
