It seems like I've seen a discussion of this somewhere, but can't seem to locate it, so I apologize for asking what may be a duplicate question. I have a newer Android phone that I would like to continue to use with one of the carriers once I arrive in Kingdom in another 10 days or so. Can I just obtain the relevant SIM card, insert in my phone along with the unlock code (which has been another issue to obtain because the US carrier is being difficult because of their supposed exclusivity on this phone model) and be up and running with a Saudi cell phone number? or did I waste my money in obtaining what now will be a relatively expensive brick? Any insights on which carrier to select would also be appreciated, knowing that there will be differing opinions on each... Thanks in advance.

We use STC for our cell phones here, which we purchased here (in KSA). I'm thinking as long as the phone you have now is unlocked (do it while you are there), a sim card purchased here should work.

So any unlocked phone will work in KSA w/ the right SIM card purchased there?

My HTC Incredible 2 (Android) works here with STC and Mobily. I had Verizon unlock it before I left in Houston.

Does anyone have opinions about Mobily or STC they care to share? I'm looking for good and bad for both, to make an educated decision on which to use when I arrive later this week.

You can buy unlock code online, just google it. (without jailbreaking) and with the right sim card, any phone should work. we use STC and it's been fine.

Absolutely and utterly not true. Any unlock phone will not work. I had a brand new unlocked TMobile Android and it will not work on the STC Network. Not sure why but had a few different STC people tell me no.

Ditto. Same experience with the T-Mobile Android I brought with me. Eventually I bought a different model per specs someone posted on one of these threads and had success later on, but first phone never worked, despite having the unlock code directly from T-Mobile. I use STC, live in DH, and my service is frequently spotty.

You need to check the frequency your phone is using. US phones uses a different GSM frequency than most of the world. 1900 vs 1800. Heck, they even used a different 3G frequency from the rest of the world as well. Unless you have a phone that has all the frequency (like the iPhone and most Nokias) then you won't be able to use your phone here.
