Hi, We are at the visa medical stage and more likely will be moving from US to Dhahran in early October. Out daughters will join 6th and 4th grade. We were wondering if we should bring school supplies/essentials from US? Appreciate any guidance in this regard.
Thanks.

I would bring them...one less thing you will have to worry about upon your arrival. Although being in Dhahran would make it easier. You can do a search for the list of school supplies on the forum as I know they have been posted before (FYI the supply list does not change from year to year). If you chose to buy supplies in KSA, I would recommend buying the calculator, spiral notebooks & loose leaf notebook paper-these can be difficult or more expensive here.

If you're arriving in October, then yes, you probably will want to bring some supplies. However, for new arrivals coming in time for the start of school on Sep. 1, I have a different opinion. We moved to DH last summer, and tried to buy everything on the school supply list in the US, thinking we should have it in hand on the first day. The brand names were specific, and I couldn't find everything the same in the US. The school supplies took up precious weight and space in our dish barrel boxes--space that could have gone toward more fruitful items. On the first day of school, we saw that most kids had paper sacks of supplies purchased at the commissary in the camp. They contained all the items by grade needed for the student. The commissary has a big display of school supplies by grade available for purchase right there in the camp. I wish we had known about that while we wasted time looking for all the supplies to the specs provided.
This year, we're not purchasing any school supplies from the US while on repat. The only exceptions are two backpacks each (the kids are hard on them, and local styles weren't to my kids' liking) and music supplies for band. We mail-ordered the calculator required for middle schoolers previously, so that's off the list this year. We got ours through Amazon last year, since it turns out the one we bought in the US wasn't even the right kind anyway and we discovered that after school started last year.

Hadia/Bolishfamily, Thank you both for the information. We have passed our visa medicals and now at the next stage of applying for the visas. I was told the visa take another 2/3 weeks, at this speed I am pretty sure we will not make it in September. I will bring the backpacks from US. I just wish there was a way to reserve those supply sacks in Dhahran for my daughters. My son will be going to KG as well. I had not mentioned him in my previous post, assuming no need for supplies in KG.
Again, thanks for the response.
Regards

I am due to arrive in Dharhan camp next week. I have a few questions about the school supplies? I read that grades 6,7,8,9 need the T1-84 graphing calculator Is that correct for those grades? I really need to know so I can purchase them here. Also besides the school supply list is there any uniform policy for the schools in the camp? Anything else I should bring with me or need to know? This forum is awesome. Thank you everyone for your help!

The calculator is "TI 84 Plus (TI 84+) Silver Edition Graphing Calculator." Please check your PM. Welcome to Dhahran.

o Hadia, My family and I are also scheduled to arrive in Dharhan in Oct. Could you please forward the 6th grade supply list and any uniform information we require. Please let me know if there is anything else I need to know to make this a smooth transition. Thanks in advance for all your help.
