Hi, I was wondering if anyone has had experience with bringing appliances and/or large appliances on board an airplane? Specificially, I am planning to bring a microwave and a vacuum cleaner over with me. I'm trying to figure out the safest way to pack them. Should I wrap them up and bring them in a suitcase or in dish box? My plan for the microwave was to stuff it full of clothes or soft items, wrap it in clothes or bubble wrap, and hope for the best. Any other suggestions? I also thought about just checking in the whole box (with original styrofoam/packing) as a single piece of luggage, but I'm not sure if that's better or worse.
Also, has anyone ever brought a bicycle over on a plane? I looked on the airline's website, and it sounds like it may be possible if a special sports equipment reservation is made in time. Any tips for packing or bringing a bike? Thanks!

We didn't bring any appliances, furniture, or any other large items (we chose cash-in-lieu). Just 7 check-ins full of clothes and small items. I got a 110V hoover bagless from SACO yesterday for 600 Saudi Riyals. It's the cyclone type like the Dyson we have in Houston (except it's much lighter). Alot of people told us that 110 volt appliances are banned and no one sells them which is completely untrue. There were atleast 10 more hoovers at SACO in Dhahran Mall.

o
I have not posted for some time but it is completely true that 110 volt appliances are being phased out - not that SACO do not still stock 110 volt appliances - great to know that you managed to get 110 volts hoover etc.
Out of curiosity did you ask SACO if they will continue to use their stock of what they have left i.e. 110 volts or are they by any chance getting in more 110 volts appliances - just wondering as there are going to be a lot of new arrivals during the rest of this year.
Thanks again Carolina

All the electrical stores I visit continue to have 110V appliances - there are never very many and they tend to disappear quite quickly, but they all seem to get new ones from time to time.
I have not read an official decision regarding the phasing out of 110V appliances. There has been a decision regarding the phasing out of the 110V power supply - which, when implemented would most likely lead to a phasing out of appliances (once there is no 110V power available anywhere, there would not be much point in stores stocking any).
But one thing to remember about the government's plan to phase out 110V power is that is was only announced in 2010 and according to the announcement:
So even if the plan is proceeding on schedule (which would be a rarity in itself) the preparations would not be complete till 2020, and full implementation of the changeover would not be till 2035.
Since 110V power could be around for another 23 years (minimum) I suspect various stores will continue to stock the appliances in the meantime.

Thanks everyone! I think I'll bring a microwave, but take my chances on a vacuum. I can live with a dirty house.
