HSPA+ in Aramco Dhahran
by legitUsername » Sun Jul 08, 2012 9:38 pm
Hi,
I'm looking into this HSPA+ internet package. It's a bit pricey (100$ a month), but the problem I have with it is the 1 year contract. They charge 600 riyals for breaching, and I'd hate to get it only to find out that the covee inside the Dhahran residential area is as awful as 3G. Has anyone had any experience with HSPA inside camp? Thank you.

Wow, those are pretty onerous contact terms! Whose system is that on? I'm typing this response from my office in Al Midra using my HSPA+ connection from Mobily. Works fine on camp as well. Unlimited data shared across three devices (iPhone, iPad, laptop) for about $100/month. No contractual obligation, and I bought the USB device that provides the HSPA+ connection at Jarir Bookstore for SAR150.

Further to the post, above, I checked the connection speed just in case I was being deceived by the software used to connect to system which proudly shows 5 bars connection strength and says "HSPA+". According to Speedtest.net, I have 13.84 Mbps down, 1.76 Mbps up. I've never seen it that fast before so they must have made some recent improvements to their system.

That's useful information; I thought it would be the same with both STC and Mobily. The package I was considering was STC's 42 Mbps Quicknet Pro I. I can't seem to find the package you're talking about, though (nothing quite close enough to 100$/month). Which one is it? Is it on their website? I certainly wouldn't mind getting my own router or dongle if it relieves me from having to sign a contract.
Also, you were talking about the connection speed. What's it usually at?
Thank You

I am subscribed for a plain-vanilla, month-to-month 3G plan with Mobily shared across three devices (their "multiSIM plan"). It's 360SAR/month. Recently I had to replace my USB dongle and on the advice of the friendly staff in the Mobily office went over to Jarir as it would be cheaper than theirs. On a whim, I bought the HSPA+ device (it was 150SAR versus 100 for the regular one) and when I plugged it in and configured the software the connection indicates HSPA+. So I seem to have back-doored my way into that service. Today it shows up as 8.41 down and 1.72 Mbps up. Let's hope this posting does not alert the Mobily Police and I find my connection downgraded!

Well that explains why there isn't any contractual obligation; they don't even know you're using the service!! I wonder if that'll work with me. It's worth a try, although I've never heard of anyone successfully back-dooring their way into a high-speed internet plan (without using the neighbors' wireless).
