Hi All, We will hopefully be relocating to KSA within next few months and have been assigned housing in Abqaiq. We are Irish with three children aged 10, 9 & 7 and we are wondering if there are any families in Abqaiq with similar aged kids who we could make contact with. We are hoping to find out a little more about the community and especially what life is like for a kid in Abqaiq, the school, activities available etc. We would love to hear from you. Thanks, Niamh

Hi NOD,
I currently live in Dhahran as a bachelor but my wife will be joining me at the end of 2012 which means we will have to move to Abqaiq. I went on a visit there last month and I have to say that the community is excellent. The facilities are great and there is a big community spirit there. I also visited the school which is amazing. Class sizes are currently around 12-15 so the quality of education is first-class. Also, there were lots of activities for children from what I could see. There is also a womens' group which arranges activities for children - there was a bunny hunt (chocolate egg hunt) being organised while I was there.
Unfortunately I don't know any other families there yet, especially those with children as I only visited once but from what I saw, I was very impressed.
I hope that helps.

Hi Itstime, that would be great, thanks. As you can see I haven't had any replies from anyone actually currently living in ABQ. What ages are your kids, it would be great for them to feel like they already 'know' someone before we get there. PM me if you wish.

Errors queen, women have never been able to get driver's license here. Talk to other single ladies on how they have gotten their cars.

Well, that's not quite true. They haven't been able to get licenses for a long time now but they could in the past. When I first came here in the 80's, women were not supposed to drive on camp without a Saudi driver's license. If a woman had a license from her home country, Aramco could get her a Saudi license. (They could not use them to drive off-camp, however).
I had one friend who used to delight in showing hers whenever asked for ID, such as when clearing items through customs, just to see the double-take that would inevitably ensue from the startled official.
I'm not quite sure when this practice was stopped, I believe it was in the mid to late 80's.
I believe the current practice employed by Security is that a woman should have a licence from her home country, before driving on camp. I'm not sure how strict they are in enforcing this or what they do in the case of Saudi nationals, but my daughter has been stopped by Security and asked to show her UK licence on at least one occasion when she was here visiting and driving my vehicle around camp. I believe there are other ladies who say they have never been checked. YMMV.
