Since these boxes actually exceed the total l+w+h requirement for most airlines by 2 inches, I was wondering if one has to absolutely "cut down" the boxes? Anyone lately have any issues with this? Thanks.

We have never had to cut ours down. We have flown KLM, Ethiad, British Airways, Emirates, Continental and American with them.

We cut ours before flying Lufthansa. We were traveling with 10 of them at the time, and didn't want to take the chance of having anything rejected or get charged extra. It was a difficult hassle to cut those -- they are sy as anything! We erred on the side of caution, but I believe I've read elsewhere in this forum that other people have also had the same experience as Julz - that they didn't bother to cut them, and no one said anything. When we bring them through next time, I don't think we'll bother to cut them.

Great!. We'll take a chance then, since cutting them is a chore. Btw @julz: I called KLM twice and got two different responses regarding the check-in luggage. One person said 3 @ 50lbs ea. were o.k, the other said I should follow what their website says; 2 @ 70lbs. :? *sigh* I am trying to get something on paper (e.g an email) that says the 3 @ 50 is okay, but so far no luck. vpainter: Some of your previous posts indicate you used "Danzaa (DHL)" ? Would you care to elaborate pls.? We opted for the in-lieu payment and wanted to take some additional dish barrel boxes (assuming they're cheaper to ship then excess luggage on the airline). Thanks all.

We came with 3 at 50 on KLM. My husband who flew before us did two heavier like 60 something and they were going to charge him. We had a third box we had brought to the airport and we just emptied into that and sent it on so he did the three as well. We had the same issue where we kept getting conflicting stories when we called. Good Luck!!

Aramco did have a contract with DHL for its employees to do shipments to SA. We haven't used it in a while and I've heard rumors that the contract doesn't exist any longer. Although, DHL does still ship to SA. I'd definitely get an estimate from them for shipping things over since you're paying for it yourself.
Also UPS and Fed EX ships here as well, but I've found them to be very expensive.

The contract is still there. Per kg is similar price as extra bag on Emirates but a lot more convenient. DHL takes any weight and any size assortments. No limit.

So how do you arrange for these to be sent...? Do you need a forwarding address...?

We have always used our home address here in Aramco.
But coming for the first time, you could probably send it to the DHL office in Dhahran, located in the Al Mujamma building.
You'd want your name and badge number on every box if you have it (print some address labels and stick it on the boxes) and what compound you'll be in.

Are new arrivals allowed to sign for package deliveries before receiving their iqama? At the time we arrived, we were told not.

I have never been asked for my iqama when receiving a package, and I have received many in my time here. At least for DHL, all I've ever had to do is quote the shipment or waybill number and tell them my name.
