All the folks I interviewed with dressed in suit/tie... nothing informal

Yes
With any interview one must look smart and well turned out and yes a suit and tie will work - my husband had his interview by phone however if he had to attend an interview in person yes a suit and tie every time.
It simply shows that you have pride in your appearance and that you want the job.
