Is Gymnastics available for gilrs in DHA?
If Gymastics is available in DHA for girls:
1) Are the girls allowed to wear leotards? 2) How much does it cost? 3) Is there any age limitation, upper and lower? 4) Are the instructors certified? Where do they come from?
Thank you for your replies.

There is an old saying, "Absence of evidence is not evidence of absence."
Just because no-one has replied does not mean there isn't any, just that no-one who has read your post is aware of whether there is or not.
I can tell you that there is not a Gymnastics Self-Directed Group, but I don't know whether the school has a gymnastics program. If they do, I'm sure it would be for girls and boys.

Thanks GroveWonderer. You are absolutely right. I am aware that the school in DHA has a sort of gymnastic program. However I am looking for a dedicated program, like the ones the girls do compeions. My oldest daughter is into it big time and it would be nice if she could continue. The fact that 30+ people read the post and there are no replies tells me that what I am looking for is not in place in DHA. There is a Saudi Arabian Gymnastic Federation (AGF) with HQ in Riyadh, however the question is if girls are allowed. I tried to contact them via e-mail, but have not gotten any reply (not surprised ) Saudi Arabian Gymnastics Federation PO Box 6768, 11452 RIYADH , SAUDI ARABIA Address: Al-Ma'zar Street Olympic Sports Complex 11452 RIYADH , SAUDI ARABIA Tel.: +966 1 4821576 Fax: +966 1 4821576 E-mail: saudigym@yahoo.com Once in DHA we will find out. Ciao

Katanga,
The one thing it's hard for the contributors of this forum to convey (and there are far, far more than just 30+, by the way) is that just because we don't have an immediate answer for a very specific question like this doesn't mean something doesn't exist. It just means we may not have kids in this activity, or it may not have come up in conversation with other parents. In fact, many of the contributors here have grown children who no longer live in the camps and are a bit disconnected about the current state of children's sports or recreational activities. Time and again, you'll get the same advice here. Wait until you've arrived and you can network in person and visit places if you're not hearing from them in advance. If you're really keen on that gymnastics association, I am quite certain you'd be more likely to reach them by telephone than by email if you need a quick answer about something.
Also, don't forget the time and weekend difference, and that many people travel for work and pleasure throughout the year. Sometimes you won't see a reply to a post for a week, sometimes longer. It just depends on when people here can find time to visit the forum. Also, what you might not realize, is that a forum contributor might be asking around about your question and hasn't received enough confirmed info to post a reply yet. You definitely shouldn't expect answers to be posted in just two days. That would be unrealistic. Take it easy on us, man!

Katanga,
To the best of my knowledge, there are no "official" sports associations or federations for women or girls, in Saudi Arabia. So I would be surprised if the federation you mention in Riyadh would be of any help.
If you are really keen on this and can find 24 other people who are interested, you could always consider forming a new Self-Directed Group for (youth) gymnastics after you arrive in kingdom. You might have a problem finding a properly-qualified coach, which I guess you would need (assuming you're not a coach yourself).
According to the Recreation Operations Manual:

Thank you very much for your replies.
I agree that when we arrive in DHA we will have a better idea. Even if girl's gymnastics is not available, I like the idea of trying to generate interest in it.
I have the strong suspiscion that I am not getting an answer from the AGF because I am inquiring about girl's gymnastics, after all I am well aware what the situation of women is in Saudi. At the end of the day when in Saudi it will be easier to contact the AGF by phone as Hadia suggested.
Thanks again.

About 8 years ago when my daughter was younger, a young Saudi gymnast was trying to start a gymnastics group, and he did offer sessions for a while. Aramco let us use a room, with mats. There was no problem with the girls wearing leotards, and he was a good coach. At that time we didn't quite manage to get the self-directed group set up though: the coach was willing to head it all up but didn't quite understand that Aramco self-directed groups are supposed to be run by a democratic committee, and there were not enough parents interested in stepping up and organizing it. I have no idea whether or not there is a gymnastics group now, but anyway, if there is, or if you want to organize one, I can at least tell you there was not a problem with the girls doing normal gymnastic work, in their leotards.

That's very good. If it was possible in the past it is possible today. We all know that things do not change or move fast in Saudi , which also has its positive sides (i.e.: slower pace). Gymnastics or not, it is not a deal breaker. Once settled in it will be interesting trying to generate interest and it will be a good opportunity to meet people and get to know the community. The biggest challange would be to find a coach.

Our friend was the gymnastics instructor here in DHA. She's had a baby this year, so don't think she's doing it any more. I'll email her and ask for any info she has.
