Garmin seems quite accurate (though they have a very peculiar routing for coming home or leaving the Dhahran compound).

If you already have a GPS, get the middle east maps. They are quite good! I used a newer Garmin model I bought here and the maps a very accurate and helpful. The newer models are particularly good since they give talking direction and recommended lane usage (which is usually correct). The other option is to buy one over here. The key is to have current maps and the Middle East specific ones - the world ones will not have the detail you will need when driving over here.

o we bought our Garmin in Bahrain and since then have bought 3 more for new hires here in RT and none of us have had any problems - we bought ours from the store in City Centre Mall I can ask my husband the name of the store if you can go to Bahrain - do let me know - PM me. We would be lost without our Garmin (called Matilda) that is for sure Carolina

I also bought mine at the big electronics store in City Center Mall in Bahrain. They are also available at the Radio Shack in the mall with Jarir by IKEA. The one I have is the Nuvi 1610T, but most any large screen new generation from Garmin is pretty effective here!

We bought a Garmin Nuvi 1310 at Radio Shack, Jarir Plaza next to IKEA. Registered it online and downloaded updates. The thing DOES NOT WORK. It contantly barks out wrong turns and recalculates unnecessarily, and has yet to ever get us from one basic Point A to Point B just right here in the Dhahran-Khobar area. Also, it's supposed to be displaying everything in English according to what we set it up to do, however, the addresses show up on the map in Arabic (although the speaking voice is English). I really wish we'd bought a GPS in the US before arriving and just added the map for this locale. Such a disappointment to spend about SR1200 and have a piece of junk we can't trust to get us anywhere. We're going to try to send it to Garmin for replacement. Perhaps we got a lemon.
Anyone else have this problem? We're mystified what to do, since we've downloaded what Garmin says are the most recent map updates, and we've fiddled around in the settings. It can't even get us home from the mall. Wants us to make a left turn off the highway when there isn't even an exit or a left turn option. Very bizarre. Maybe we're doing something wrong??

We bought a Garmin GPS in the States and then loaded the Middle East maps onto it. We have had no problems at all and it has been invaluable. We used it constantly when we first arrived to help with navigating Khobar/Dharhan etc. Since then we have used when we drove from KSA to Bahrain, Doha, and Abu Dhabi and recently on our trip to Oman. It has worked everywhere and we would be lost without it!

Sorry you have had so many problems with your Garmin but I have heard the same from other people that bought what you bought from the same shop in Khobar - the people here on RT that have bought their Garmin from the same shop as we did in Bahrain we have had no problems at all so yes maybe they sold to you a bad one - we did pay quite a lot for ours but worth every penny.
In the meantime we do not need the use of ours every day so if you are going on an impending trip you can most certainly borrow ours - hope this helps.
Let me know Carolina

we bought a garmin (1410 I think) from the same radioshack near jarir and it has been fantastic, we have used it all over khobar/dammam and bahrain without any problems whatsoever

The actual dealer for Garmin is called Darmoja, there's a shop somewhere in Khobar that you can send for service and whatnot. I bought my 865T from there and it's been working fine BUT, I'm not sure if this the maps issue or whatever but the Navigation is never correct if you are starting from the Dhahran Camp or trying to return to the Dhahran camp. It never wants you to use the road that goes through Gate 1 (KFUPM) and straight to Sixth Street. It always try to ask you to use the entry from Dhahran Palace hotel (Gate 2 I think) which is total rubbish. It is always accurate if it tries to navigate you anywhere else though, it just refuses to let you use Gate 1. It still mystifies me.

Iphone and ipad MAPs work good too. Interesting fact, they work without a data package. Shows your location and I did not see any issues so far. Yes no voice directions. set directions before leaving wi-fi range/home, if going to a new area, will need a co-pilot.

o to the last posting
I certainly respect what you said but our Garmin knows when to avoid many traffic diversions for which there are many in the Kingdom, Bahrain, Qatar and Spain and France where we have used her sorry but we have come to call her Maltilda and she has never ever let us down.
Any of you new hires out there do get a Garmin it is vital to get you around.
I was always one for maps but this Garmin comes out 100% for us but of course others may differ but I note there are also other Aramcons on this posting that say the same.
All the best to you all to navigate in the Kingdom and beyond.
Kind Regards Carolina
