I have few questions regarding security at the compound residence.
1) Since we will be bringing important docs such as passports, birth certificates, etc. is there a safety deposit box you rent at the local bank? If not, how do you handle important docs and personal belongings? 2) When you get the key to the house, do you change the locks? 3) When you travel on vacation, outside the Kingdom, is your house safe after being locked up? 4) When shipping some electrical appliances including desktop computers, TVs, microwave ovens, are they safe via the traditional shipment or should I arrange for different type of shipment. 5) Finally, many people on the forum mentioned “ebox” for shipping stuff. Can someone elaborate more on the “ebox” and how it works and how much can you fit in there, and if possible, the cost?
Thanks in advance and Happy New Year!

We came from Texas three months ago with thirteen U-Haul dish barrel boxes (about 70 pounds each). We didn't have any problems at the airport in Houston where we checked in the 13 boxes plus three suitcases. We were allowed to bring twelve since we are 5 people and didn't have to pay for the extra luggage. In Damman airport the luggage wasn't searched at all.

1. We brought a small safe that we bolted to the wall. 2. We didn't change the locks. 3. Yes your house is safe when you leave. 4. We shipped most of our stuff via the traditional shipment including a computer. We did ship a computer in the ebox as well and carried two lap tops on the plane with us. We sent all tv's on the traditional shipment without any problems. 5. The ebox is a giant box that can hold up to 400 pounds. It will arrive about 3 weeks after you arrive although it can take longer. Aramco pays for the eboxes if you take the option to have them ship for you.

Here are the dimensions of an ebox: 41 x 28 3⁄4 x 25 1⁄2" Double Wall 275 lb. Corrugated Boxes
1. No safety deposit boxes that I know. People do have safes and lock boxes they've bought.
2. No, you do not change the locks. There is an office in Aramco that helps you when you lock yourself out.
3. Many people have house sitters (some of the nurses on single status do house sitting) or their houseboys/maids stay in their home when they are gone.
4. They are fine in the shipment. Some of those things you may want in your ebox. I don't know where you're coming from to know if your shipping includes an ebox. Check with your relocation agent, they'll be able to tell you. Regular shipment can take up to 3 months and the ebox usually arrives within 10 days to 2 weeks.
5. Cost? Are you taking cash in lieu of shipping? Aramco picks up the cost if they are taking care of your shipment. If you have cash in lieu of shipping you'll have to check with a shipping company for their cost to ship an ebox.
Happy New Year!

Howdy... my family has decided to leave most of the furniture at home, and take everyone's advice and load up on: clothing, appliances etc.. We are hoping to fit all of this in the ebox, so that we can take the cash in lieu of a sea shipment. We plan on buy all of our furniture there (IKEA probably) Can you get an ebox (how big is it? is there only one for the whole family?) and get the cash in lieu of a sea shipment? How easy is it to ship say a sail boat in the sea shipment? Thanks

If you decided to take cash in lieu then you won't qualify for any type of shipment including the air shipment. You will have to arrange that at your own expense.
My relocation adviser back in Houston told me it's either surface/air shipment OR cash in lieu.
I highly advise you to ship your furniture if yours is still in good shape. Things here are a bit expensive. Your house at the camp is wired for 110VAC and the 110VAC appliances are limited. Even if things are available, it will take you time to locate them.
