I am arriving in Dhahran in a few weeks time from the UK, and was wondering if there are ATMs accepting Visa debit cards, or whether the thing to do is to bring physical dollars with which to convert to SR. Thanks for any advice you can offer.

ATMs on the compound that you can use. Also bring a supply of checks for your checking account, you can write a check at the bank on the compound - you write it in your currency and they give it to you in SR's. You can bring some cash and do an exchange at the Dammam airport to have some cash readily available in the beginning.

i would get some riyals in the uk before leaving, not much is required maybe a bit for the baggage handlers at the airport. Inform your bank you will be using your card in Saudi then you can use your visa debit in any cash machine straight away.

I'm sorry but in my experience that is only true for cheques drawn on US banks. Last time I checked, the NCB bank on camp would not take UK cheques without your Dept Manager co-signing to guarantee the cheque, no matter how small the amount. Since that basically means that your Manager would have to make good on the cheque if anything goes wrong with the transaction, I have never felt comfortable doing this and neither has any other Brit that I know.

Thanks for the update, GroveWanderer, I know UK employees used to be able to cash checks. Sorry, if that has changed. But as far as the manager signing the check, we've done that a few times with no problems.

I have never had a problem using atm cards in KSA. However, a friend had difficulty using his Canadian atm card (from TD) - he had to go hunting for an atm that worked (he found/uses Samba atm machines). Don't forget to notify your bank that you are traveling.
