o,

I will be joining Aramco within few weeks. Currently, I don't have a driving licence and don't have time to get it from my country. So, I would like to know if it is easy to apply for a licence in KSA and how much time it takes. Please, if someone can describe the process for me and if Aramco has any arrangements for that ?

Ohh dear ..... that will be an experience that you will want to avoid. If possible, try and get a driving license from your country and hope that you can convert it once you come into the Kingdom. I've had friends who had had to take the driving test here and it was not pleasant.

If you have to take the test, talk to one of your Saudi co-workers and ask him to accompany you. Most helpful!

I am living here in Dhahran and have been speaking to my Saudi colleagues about this as I haven't got a driving licence in my home country either. They said if you know how to drive an automatic car then the test is usually straight forward although this may have changed since they did their tests!

Basically I have been told by a number of people that the driving test is very basic - you carry out the test at the test centre and not on the open road so you don't have to worry about driving outside the community. There is a test centre in Khobar which I am planning to go to early next year (once I am more comfortable driving) but I would definitely agree with vpainter - I am planning on taking a Saudi colleague with me in case there are any issues and to act as a translator if necessary.

I will let you know how I get on! Am sure it will be an experience though!
