Your relocation advisor is the one who can best answer that. You shipping weight allowance is base on your family size. We were told that the payment in lieu is calculated as half of the estimated shipping cost of your weight allowance.

I am assuming that you will be coming from USA. Shipping allowance will be approximately 5000 lbs for yourself, plus 5000 lbs for your spouse, plus 1000 lbs for each kid. So for a family of 4 persons total weight will be 12000 lbs. Cash-in-lieu will be around US $0.90/lbs. This equates to US $10,800.
Please note that if you will be coming ahead of your family, you can request your quota as cash-in-lieu and use the remaining weight to ship whatever you want with your family. In short you can get cash-in-lieu of US $4,500 plus shipping allowance for 7000 lbs. It worked for me last year.

We had asked the question during orientation and what I understand we cannot split the allowance, have to bring all or take money. Also they said it was around US$ 1 = 1 lb. I guess as suggested above your relocation advisor is the best person to answer about your specific case.

The orientation person is not the person to give you information about your shipment and cash-in-lieu, please do contact your relocation agent.
There are exceptions that can be made for individual needs.

if you arrive before the family you get 40% of the total enlement which is adequate. in my case i got SR23,000 (40%). it's all standardized in the aramco logistics system. however, you will only get it with your first paycheck which may take up to 6 weeks.

My relocation advisor provided me with an estimate based on the rates at the time so I I could decide more easily. Her figure was pretty close to what I received, so they are the best people to ask.

As was stated, your advisor is the best person to ask about the amounts.
As to whats right for you, I would suggest taking a long hard look at what's important to you. Furniture that is 'nice' but can be replaced as opposed to items which have sentimental value.
Recently there appears to have been some changes with the movers or customs. Where those who arrived a few years ago gave glowing reviews of their move, several recently (including myself) have received their shipments opened, dirty, and sometimes damaged.
My wife and I decided to move our stuff, but only a few items had real value to us. We had nice furniture, but if we could have done it all over again we would have taken the cash, then used part of it to move those few items with sentimental value and simply started over with furniture from here. Yes, it can be hard to find american style furniture, but receiving your items dirty, broken, and battered is even worse.
Good luck!

We arrived last Dec and they had only opened a few of the boxes and resealed them. From what I could tell only about 6 boxes out of several hundred were opened. We had a few things broken but most was small stuff like a few Pyrex dishes. We have moved five times and we had less items broken on this international move then we had on our domestic moves. I think some of it has to do with how well your packers in the States pack it. If you decorate for any holiday you will have a hard time finding that over here.
