I found the roads to be quite good. I would recommend not driving in the dark because there are no camel fences. And there are camels. We found no clean restrooms but packed a lot of pretzels so no problem. Saudi crossing is very easy. Actually better than the causeway. UAE crossing I found to be complicated. Different nationalities go through slightly different processes. The border crossing is hours away from even Abu Dhabi so they don't hire top scientists to work there. After crossing which takes about an hour, Dubai is still about three hours away. Dubai has a traffic control system that I think is called something like Sagelik. You need to buy this as soon as you can. Road signs say this is available at any gas station. This was not true. We spent a lot of time finding a gas station that sold it with ever increasing stress because we were getting closer to the cameras. Remember to reset your watch while driving because of time zone difference. Driving back to Saudi is much easier.
