Can you bid on a house in a different camp? For example, you work in DH, but are assigned housing in UDH. Can you save your points and bid yourself into DH?

Yes, it just take time to bid yourself into a bigger house. For example, you live at UDH and commute to DH. The problem lots of new people face is the company is always hiring people at various grade codes: some higher than you, some the same gc as you, and some lower than you. Housing points are awarded based on time with the company and your grade code (higher the grade code, more points). A new hire comes in a year after you do, but he pops up above you on the list because he was hired at a higher grade code than you. OR, say for example, they open a new xxxx center or office in your camp and people from DH end up transferring to your camp. Many of them have 5+ years of service and are at around the same gc as you, but have more time...BAM, they're WAY higher on the list than you. This kind of cycle happens and frustrates lots of new people, so just try to be patient. It took me 4 years to bid out of initial townhouse housing because of various situations like described above. Now, RT is nearly at capacity, so unless a lot of people leave RT, it doesn't appear as though there will be a lot of housing movement here for a while.
It's all about patience!

No you can't bid on a house in a different camp. You must live in the camp closest to your work location.

I don't think they would allow anyone to work in Dhahran and live in UDH. When UDH employees go to Dhahran for a course or a work assignment, they're paid per diem. If they are assigned to Dhahran for an extended period of time, they may be given housing in Dhahran as well.
The housing rules are that you should stay in your home for 5 years unless you have more children which would allow you to bid on a larger home. We've been trying for a year and a half to get a bigger home in UDH, but we've always been outbid, even though my husband isn't too low on the list...he's been working for Aramco for +10 years...We're hoping next time we'll get lucky. My dream home here went to #1 on the list last time....It had the perfect private back yard with nice grass and a sprinkler system installed.

I agree with you Umm Ryan...I seriously doubt the company would put anyone in UDH and have them commute to DH...they're putting folks now in ABQ and having them commute to DH. And it's my understanding that you most certainly CAN live in another camp and bid on a house in another camp. Case in point: you live in Dhahran and receive notice your job is being transferred to RT. You remain on the DH bid list, and Housing adds your name to RT's housing list. Your job eventually transfers to RT and you begin commuting every day from DH to RT. You remain on the RT bid list, even though you're living in DH, until you are successful in bidding on a house at RT. This happened to several people who work at the leadership center and moved up here from DH.

also the policy now is you have to be in your house for 3 years prior to being on the bid list.

vpainter, we just moved into a family house at RT and was told that we could bid after 2 years here. Anyway, I'm more than satisfied with the house, so I guess we'll stay here!

Each compound may be different, thank you, alex for sharing that info. DHA is 3 years, probably due to the housing shortage, but it's better than the 5 years it used to be. I'll check with housing next time I'm down there and see if it's changed here too.
