Craftsman Gae Door Opener

Did anyone recently have a broken craftsman gae door opener replaced? Please advise if so, as we believe we have been 'switched' a broken one for a new one by a dishonest electrician. ie he is telling us that a unit that is dirty, broken, with no chain or openers, is what he found in a sealed box which we just brought from Sears in the US.
