I was wondering if this is accepted in Saudi Arabia. Since it may take a while for the iqama to be issued, wouldn't it be OK to drive using this license? Just a thought...

Sorry to dash you hopes Feline, but you cannot drive here without a Saudi license, they do not recognise the international license here as they do in some other GCC states. You won't get a car or insurance without a valid KSA license and Iqama. So you stuck with the buses for now (at least you have them, I don't), they are a good way to find your way around before you throw yourself into the melee that passes for driving here.

Thank you, my husband already knew the answer to this one. I should have done my homework.

Not true, I was able to rent cars from Budget in Khobar and Majestic in Dammam based on my US licence & AAA International permit, however, I think there is a rule that this is allowed only for a month from arrival. Your best information is probably with Personnel or FIFA, the passport office.

It definitely can be done as I am currently renting a Camry from Avis using my TX driver's license. They quoted a price that I thought was a bit high, but included insurance. After going with my driver all around the back alleys of Khobar in the rent-a-car district, only to find that few were willing/able to do so or else wanted to charge more, I went back to Avis. The Saudi license will be in my hands in two days so for right now we're staying on camp.

Thank you. It's good to know that it can be done.

I stand corrected, however I don't live in the "Big Bubble" where many things seem to be done differently to what I have experienced on the west coast, where I have been unable to hire anything.
