LuLu has/had a section for fabric upstairs. I haven't been there in a very long time, so I cannot tell you if they still have that section or not. If you go there, maybe try asking the workers if they know of any shops for fabric. Usually you will find fabric stores in the older parts of the city. I don't really know my way around the older part of Khobar, but I think that's where you'll find the small fabric stores and get the best prices. Also, IKEA has some fabric.

There IS a street in Khobar that does have fabrics and notions....it's the street (sorry, don't know exactly where it is, we just stumbled onto it one day) that has the bridal gowns in the windows...goes for about a block....older souks section.

Zamil stores in Khobar has a pretty decent selection of fabrics, the selection is somewhat comparable to Joanne fabrics in the US. Its on the top floor (3 or 4?).

Hi Hadia Your best bet for upholstery and curtain fabrics is Al Guthmi (or something like that!) It is just before Al Rashid Mall as you return to Dhahran on the main Khobar/Dhahran Road (between Al rashid and the STC shop). It has a car park out front and a wide selection of fabric swatches inside, they usually order what you want, it takes about a week to 10 days.

Gee, thanks, everyone! I'm looking forward to the arrival of my sewing machine so I can get to work creating some new items for the home. This gives me some shopping guidance the next time we venture out. Kind regards...

In case you haven't found a fabric store yet (Hadia), I have found one (maybe the same as onefabdeb). Here are directions:
1) Drive up King Khalid Street 2) Turn left on 10th street (or thereabouts, whichever allows left turns) 3) Take the first left off that street onto another street (parallel to King Khalid St) 4) The fabric shop is a few doors down on the left. A few shops down from it is a wedding/fancy dress shop.

Bandar street has several fabric stores. They start between 1st and 2nd cross and go down a couple of blocks. Dhahran Road to King Khaled street take the first available left (streets are one way) and then take a right on Bandar street - its several blocks down - turn right and the fabric stores will be on your left. Marose - 8949436 is between 1st and 2nd cross.
Also in Khobar: Al Hawanem Textiles - 8949436 on Suaicat Street opposite Fakhri Hospital. (haven't been here in many years - call to be sure still in business)
Also as stated Zamil's has a large selection of fabrics. Dhahran Road to King Khaled or the road by Ramanyah Mall, take a right on 4th (Zamil's is on 3rd, but is one way to the left) Turn Right on the street prior to the Corniche Road, Zamil's is on the left at the end of the block. You can go Dhahran Road to Corniche Road, take a left, make a U-Turn when available and go to 3rd street take a right, Zamil's is on the right.
There are also so many fabric stores in Dammam:
Indian Silk Center - On 15th street and 10th cross. 827-1375 Queens Fabrics for Textiles - Ladies Market King Faisal Street - Dammam Ahmed: 052885576 Mohd O. Al Guthmi Sons Co. Dammam Main Branch: 1st Street in front of Sheraton Hotel 8337440 Ibrahim M. Al-Hobayyeb Trading Est. (upholstery and sheers) Dammam - Al Dhahran Street 8263351 Naseej Furnishing Fabrics - Bin Khalidon Street 038275391 Al Saleh - 8269525 and 8275488 (has mill ends - discontinued fabrics) They used to have a Khobar store on King Khaled between 16th and 17th cross also. AlJedaie Exclusive Furnishing Fabrics (have great fabrics with some that are truly expensive) opposite the Sheritan Hotel - 8090222. They have a smaller store in Khobar across from the Al Rashid Mall on Dhahran Road - towards the corniche.
I've been to some this year and some not for many years, so hope they're all still in business.

Hi, My sewing machine is not with the stuff to go to ksa. It will probably either come on the plane with us or be left behind for use on visits home. If I do leave it behind, are there reasonably priced and easily findable/accessible (by bus or taxi) sewing machines (that with a walking foot) and a few basic sches & cutting mats? These items are precious to me, so maybe it's not with risking leaving the machine behind, but I thought I'd ask. Thanks!

There is a Bernina store that sells machines and feet in Khobar. There is a quilt group in all the compounds that you can join and enjoy.

Why not just bring your machine with you? I use mine all the time--glad I didn't give it away. It was especially handy when we were new arrivals--hemming curtains, making kids' costumes and the like. I've seen general use sewing machines in dept stores here. Not sure about brand or quality.
