We didn't bring a telescope in with our initial shipment, but did bring one in later with us in our checked luggage - no problem - we did enter and exit through Bahrain.

The list of "Don't Bring" items I got was as lenghty as it was inaccurate. Chess sets, carvings of animals, chewing gum, sweets, telescopes, radio controlled toys, barbie dolls were all on that list. The same items are all available for sale in shopping malls and supermarkets here. I suspect that list was made about 20 years ago and has not been updated since. My Saudi supervisor told me that 15 or 20 years back transitor radios were banned too.

The reason the list has not been updated is that each custom's officer can determine what's allowed in and what's not. These things could be confiscated if the custom's agent wanted to. Fortunately, most of it is not confiscated these days, but the possibility is there.

We brought our son's telescope in our shipment. Unfortunately he didn't get much use out of it as there is a lot of interference from lights around Dhahran as well as dust. I am sure it must be better if you go well out into the desert.
