HI Forum,
We are moving to KSA soon from Australia. I am reaching out to see how many families chose to ship Vs Purchase most stuff once there.
We are a family of 3 and shipping cost is coming about USD 14 K.
Did anyone had to pay duty or extra taxes by Saudi customs ?
Any major issues - significant delays, breakage and insurance wise, any items taken away by customs etc pls share
We estimate our household stuff would be about USD 50 K.
Thanks for sharing your life experiences.
Shukran

Hi Shukran,
I am also shipping my furniture since it's all brand new, less than 1 year of use. I never planned moving overseas so we bought good quality furniture and electrical last year when we bought a house (costed about 30k). Our shipping estimate is 15k which I believe to be compensated by cash in-lieu. Of course we can sell them all and buy brand new but we will not even get half the price we paid, also cannot buy the same quality products unless we pay another 30k. My math was, we sell all at 10k, get compensation, buy all new at 30k so it's pretty much breakeven. But will be much hassle selling and arranging the viewing etc.

I agree and our figures are similar, does not make sense to sell here and buy again. Prices in KSA are high too. My RA mentioned USD 16 K as shipping allowance, so it would be break even and saves hassle of selling and re-purchasing along with new job. Thanks for sharing your thoughts and good luck with the Biggg move

We went with buying, the houses in camp are not huge, they are open plan and if you get an apartment you have no hallway or gae. I did not want to be stuck with furniture that did not fit, maybe make the decision once you’ve been assigned?

Hi kanga25, I am awaiting visa issuance from Canberra atm. Just wondering when you will be arriving in KSA. Would be great to keep in touch as I suspect you will arrive there before me. All the best with the big move! Cheers, rh

Had my initial appointment a month ago and got cancelled due to visa block. I guess the forum is currently occupied with a bunch of Aussie applicants at the moment due to the visa block issue! Good luck with your move too!

I’m personally selling/storing a lot of my furniture in Aus and buying the basics in Saudi with the cash in lieu, if things don’t work out and I need to exit I don’t want to ship all my furniture back.
Rather gift or sell the new furniture in the kingdom that was purchased to suit our apartment.
I have one question though, is a bed provided on arrival (I assume it is)? If so, is it a new mattress?

Bed will be provided for 90 days (free use). Not a new mattress but they are in a very good quality. You can keep bed and other furniture with nominal monthly rent for each piece. They are very basics design and hence most people return them once they buy their own

They are not always brand new but are immaculately clean plus new bedding and new basic kitchenware. You do get fridge, dishwasher and stove but washing machines and dryers are rare, out of stock. Instead they provide you with 3 months of free laundry at the cleaners, they don’t do socks or underwear.
