Hi All,
First time posting, so just want to say thanks to all the comments and time people put into making this forum informative and helpful.
I'm currently considering an offer for an expat position and want to get a better understanding about career development opportunities. I have a PhD and 6 yoe, so am on the earlier side of my career and trying to understand whether this position can be good in the medium/long term.
From reading so far it seems that opportunities to move up are rare for expats, in terms of position/responsibilities, so I'm curious to know if its possible to move laterally and work on different projects/tasks as a way of getting exposure to different things.
Is this something that is allowed for people in expat positions (i.e., through an internal job board) or is there the expectation that expats are hired for a specific project/task/department and cannot move to something else?
Thanks

You tend to stay where you are put, in order for you to move your manager has to agree and that does not tend to be forthcoming due to their hiring policies.
And, you have to remember that unlike someone with 25-30 years in the business there are going to be a lot of locals with the same amount of experience as you, same education so if there were any juicy opportunities to move into, you are not going to be offered them.
At your age this is about the money, will a few years get you mortgage free, clear debts etc?

Thanks Almost no lateral moves for expats now. If you are coming to Aramco, don't expect much for career growth else you will be disappointed

Have to back up what others have said, zero chance of promotion, even a transfer to another department is very rare.

As the others have said, expect zero career development. The recommendation is take a position when you are between 45-50, put in your 10 years of a fairly easy job and retire. If you are at the beginning or middle of your career it can be a stifling and frustrating.
