I realize most of Aramco housing is 220v now and shipping 120v devices to Saudi is no longer allowed. We have a couple 120v devices we want to bring in our ck in bags and plan to buy a voltage converter from 220 to 120 in order to use them safely, assuming we get a 220v house.
Does anyone know if DMM customs are, screening, banning or confiscating 120v devices from arriving passengers’ ck in bags at the airport?
Thanks, JRS

Not sure about 120v devices, but the automatic scanner on arrival "nothing to declare exit" catched our few boxes which contained plastic gun toys. We needed to scan them again in a separate room and had to open each box for inspection.

What have recent experiences been with electronics? Like cell phones, iPad's, Kindle's etc.? When you arrived - were these taken from you and contents reviewed?

No, I don’t believe that ever happens - that is saudi customs reviewing laptops, tablets or other electronics for content.

I’d never say never because a spot check on devices can always happen but otherwise no, they don’t as standard. They do have a general spot checking system for suitcases where they pull someone off, randomly, right by the exit (I wanted to cry, so close!). Then they choose two bags, scan, and ask to see something. For us it was a hairdryer and shoebox of Lego (they didn’t even open the box). They were very friendly, helpful and kind

Nothing is banned like 220V....this is your personal items and not prohibited...so don't worry
There are almost 5 points of 220v in old houses where still upgradation is yet done.... you can use that points for your 220v electronics
One more thing, all mobile, ipad, laptop or small hand hold appliances are fine for both 110v as well as 220v.......... you can read on the charger side....

Thanks, JRS I wouldn't be so sure that most housing has been upgraded, maybe depending on the camp. Pretty sure that possibly 1/2 the houses in the camp I'm in are yet to be upgraded. My house didn't have a single 220 VAC outlet (aside from the clothes drier) and it might be scheduled for an upgrade next year. I have never had issues with personal electronic devices or 120 VAC appliances being brought into kingdom. When I arrived three years ago I brought 120 VAC microwave, coffee maker, power tools, toaster etc. Step up transformers aren't as common in stores, but there are plenty of people in camp that have boxes full of them. I believe the only restriction on 120 VAC appliances is they can't be sold commercially. They don't care about personal devices. Anything that resembles alcohol, drugs or paraphernalia can get you flagged. I set off the alarm for extra screening for a large bottle of Tapatio hot sauce last time I arrived at DMM. Once I pulled the big bottle from my bag and explained it was hot sauce, I was told to repack my bag and waved on through.
