Can you please let me know the transport option available in RT? I probably know the car I want to buy but looks like it will need Iqama and license conversion before I can buy one which might take around 3 weeks?

Never assume something will take only 3 weeks in kingdom. It may be 2-3 weeks, it may be 6 weeks or more. It takes as long as it takes.
As to cars - if its just on RT camp, you could just buy a bicycle, or hire a car for 4 weeks till you get fixed out. There are also work buses that will take you to/from work just leaving the shopping run to take care of. Again, there are regular shoppers buses to Dammam, Khobar and Rahima.

When you say you plan to buy a certain model, I would consider the facts that the secondhand market is not the easiest to negotiate, there can be a long waiting time for new vehicles and getting finance if you require it is not always possible until you have completed probation. Stay open minded on it.

Good to know about wait time for it and loan. I'll keep that in mind and finance accordingly before coming.

If you get your iqama and driving licence in only three weeks I’ll be amazed. I’d wager more like 2 months.
Good luck with car finance in Saudi!! Your new car will be peppered with dents and dings in no time!

Your new car will be peppered with dents and dings in no time! My husband had his licence at just over 4 weeks. It is doable if the translations etc are timely.

Had my Saudi DL within a couple weeks after iqama issuance. Syarah online auto car sale website is a great source to buy new & used cars from. That’s where I bought my 2020 Toyota Fortuner - very clean, low miles and good price! All makes and models and they ship anywhere in the Kingdom for nominal fee.

Is there anybody on this forum who doesn't drive and could shed a light how they are getting by? I understand that the buses are unreliable so it would be great to hear some real stories from people actually cycling, etc

Presumably the renting of cars etc is all done after you arrive and not on D1?
Do you need to leave the compound in Dhahran or will the rental drop the car off?
Many thx

The recently returned circuit buses appear to be okay too. You do see bicycles but more in winter or in the evening. It’s very, very hot.

But, you might have to shop around to find one that will rent to you if you do not have an international driving licence. And, technically, once you have an iqama you are supposed to have a valid Saudi licence to rent.

Thought I would to this thread, for newcomers.
There is a new app that provides free minibus, on demand, on camp. It appears to be working well. Makes it a lot easier to get about, shop, socialise etc if without a car.
