Unfortunately, unless your work location is dhahran you won’t be allowed to bid on houses in Dhahran. You’ll be eligible to bid on houses 2 years after your initial housing assignment but it’s restricted to your work location. If the employees work location is Abqaiq area, you’ll only be allowed to bid on homes on Abqaiq compound. Don’t believe anything your recruiter says to the contrary.

Don't expect to have an option to transfer. As an expat you should assume that you will have no career advancement and no opportunity to transfer between departments or camps. Be thankful you aren't in Udhailiyah, you are a short driving distance to Khobar so can go after work for shopping or a meal out.
You have to work for Aramco for 2 years before you can apply for jobs within Aramco, but, it comes down to weather your division head is willing to let you go, and it comes down to who has more wasta, your supervisor or a supervisor who wants you. So, if your division head likes you, that is good and bad. Good for some security, but bad in terms of mobility.

@dirtydan, have you by any chance had any luck with receiving any layout of homes in Abqaiq?

Abqaiq is a great community so I wouldn’t be discoued that you aren’t on Dhahran compound. I’ve lived in Ras Tanura for 8 years and have no desire to relocate to Dhahran. RT has buses to the British and American schools in Dhahran so I assume that Abqaiq will have the same.

Yep echo others comments, you’re stuck there as long as your job is based in that location. It’s far worse than Dhahran IMO and that is a low bar, but some do adapt… You’re going to be spending a lot of time on the road travelling to better places to compensate.
