STC's 5G Mobile and Internet networks are active in the Dammam/Dhahran/Khobar area. There are limited devices and routers that STC has to offer at the moment. Given upcoming sales and holiday seasons, if you're shopping around for a new device or router, and plan to use 5G, ensure your device or router is 5G compliant.
If you are a new hire and /or expecting visitors, ensure devices are unlocked before travelling so you can swap out SIM cards. Also, new hires (until they receive Iqama) and all visitors, can only take out 1 pre-paid mobile SIM card, without any monthly plans.
You CANNOT take out a data SIM card or subscribe to montly pre-paid plans, or even go post-paid, unless you have Iqama. In other words, unless you subscribe to one of the text message packages during activation, you will blow thru data.
Also, once you get Iqama, go back with details to STC or your provider, otherwise your line will get activated.

I'll re-iterate that you should make sure your mobile is unlocked before arriving in the kingdom. I assumed my AT&T phone was unlocked because the instructor in my orientation course said she had an AT&T mobile was unlocked. Long story short, my phone wasn't unlocked. In the 4 or 5 days it took me to get it straightened out between my wife and AT&T I racked up over $300 in roaming fees, international calls etc.
The STC prepaid sim card works great. I use my iphone as a hotspot. STC is starting to run fiber into the camps, so I'm going to wait until they offer fiber before I decide if I get a data SIM card or go with the fiber.
Vonage works great for calls home. Set it up before you leave. Facebook messenger and wattsapp are also good ways to keep in touch with home
