o,
I am preparing to move to KSA in the coming months. What is still an open question is the availability of schooling for my children. I understand that non US-citizens are not eligible nowadays to live in the Aramco compound. Access to Aramco schools is however linked to living on the Aramco compound. There seems to be a range of schools in Al-Khobar & Dhahran, however admission processes have now been closed for the next academic year (i.e. 2018-2019). What experience have people made trying to gain access to schools "mid-year" ? Is it common to arrive without a school place and then get one on short-notice? I was told about people getting a place in Bahrain and spouses driving the kids there every day. Looking at google maps that looks like quite a long-ish journey. Additionally women driving in KSA is only starting, so its another question whether this will all be possible from day 1. I would be grateful to learn about how people have coped with this challenge. Thanks in advance.
regards
d.

How old are the kids? So what grade/year are you looking for, and what system (US, UK, other, don't mind)? There is a massive turn over in students, with places moving all the time. Generally, the older the child, the easier it is to find a place. But some schools are very popular, and places go as quickly as they become available. I would be surprised if you could secure a popular school for young children without being in kingdom first. Id be pretty certain you need to be in kingdom, with the possibility of the kids visiting for an assesment.
We got places mid year (several years ago). From phone call saying places were available to starting school was 8 days (calander days, not work days).

Hi Swan, thanks for the quick reply. We look for UK or "don't mind" as we are not attached to any specific country. Looking for year 2 and year 6 in UK system. Just wanted to get a feel, whether indeed its common for kids to have to wait till the start of the coming year. I understand the "being in kingdom point" and its referred to on the admission pages. Anyway, a dynamic system is what we need :-).

Hi Duncan My children managed to get admission in yr 5 and yr 9 in Dhahran British Grammar School in January this year. I moved them from UK after Christmas. I was in similar situation like yours but once you are and inquire personally with school things move quicker. I only applied to tDBGS so I cannot tell u about other schools. GOOD LUCK
