Has anyone else considered taking a leave from their current position to try out a new position at aramco? It seems that things are quite tentative and that part of the world and at Aramco - especially with the rapidly changing expat packages, has anyone taken vacation to begin work and trial the job rather than giving full notice at current employment?

Trial the position? Highly unlikely.
The time, effort, and money Aramco and ASC from Houston spend in bringing someone over doesn't justify a trial period.
The reality is if you ignore the media, keep an open mind, and go with the flow, as in, take the time to learn how things are done the Aramco way, you'll do just fine.
