o there,
As I am not yet sure whether I'd ever relocate the family to Saudi Arabia I am flirting with the idea of living in Bharain where they can easily come for visits during school holidays and mid-term breaks. I understand that the duration of the journey can be as low as under an hour or up to 3 hours if system breaks down or during weekends when a lot of people are travelling.
My questions is:
1. Without working there, what are the requirements for renting in Bharain? 2. I have heard of CPR which I guess you can only get if you get a Bharain residence permit 3. Can you rent with only the Saudi Multi-entry visa?
Any other info would be appreciated.
Thanks

People do commute, so all must be possible. Have you considered living in KSA, and just going to Bahrain (Dubai, Oman, Jordan) when the family come over?

Swan,
Once again thanks. I am basically looking at all possible options as Mrs & I are still discussing what the best option for us is. To avoid disruption to kids' education (currently in Year 5, 3, & 2) we are thinking of the family remaining in the UK until, at least, the first completes her primary. Once she has completed her primary she may then go to boarding school for her secondary and Mrs & the rest can then come over.
Considering restrictions in visiting Saudi Arabia, living in Bharain would allow the family to visit more regularly.

I recommend you discuss this with an HR rep before taking that decision. It is a topic of recent discussion and I don't know what policy decision they have taken or will take.

bogiefrommuskogee, Am I right in assuming that what you are talking about is HR looking into the issue of employees living in Bharain and claiming FAMILY status? If yes, that is not what I am thinking of right now. Rather, I am thinking of living there as a BACHELOR to make it easy for the family to visit regularly. Or are they looking into people living there as a BACHELOR as well?

Hi teeboy12, My understanding is that as a bachelor you will receive three months base salary as rental assistance but in order to claim this you must have a registered Saudi address. I am not sure what HR policy currently is on "going it alone" in Bahrain.

I heard that HR is reviewing whether people can live in Bahrain or not regardless of status but family status will definitely draw the most attention as they can easily track trips across the causeway. I remember another discussion where somebody got a waiver to live there and was not on family status. I don't understand why the company should care so much about bachelor status but they seem to. There are a couple of legitimate concerns such as workman's comp insurance does not apply there and, if they deem you are in a "critical" job that might require your presence on little notice, they would not want you there. I know a guy who recently went from consultant to full time hire and he is having to move from Bahrain to Dhahran. So I really don't know one way or the other so I just recommend you investigate thoroughly before signing that Bahrain lease.

Thanks for the hint. I will make further enquiries at the appropriate time.

This is an old thread, but I am curious did you find a way to live in Bahrain. We are thinking about moving to Bahrain like you are. Especially as it seems more easy to find a proper school for my sons in Bahrain. We are willing to give up family status and cover the extra costs ourselves (and it also is the right way to do it, I think). We are in another situation as my husband is part of the Jazan crew. He would only travel the causeway twice a week and spend his weekends in Bahrain. For me and the boys it would be a better life as I would be less dependent on my husband. I hope someone has some information about this.
