Is this only for Asian and Arab nationalities? I think it applies to global payroll as well.

I have not heard of any differentiation by payroll. In the past, probation has usually only been a formality. We have a new employee who passed his 90 day probation after only one month on the job. It looks like they will now take probation more seriously and there is nothing really wrong with that. We do occasionally get some bad fits but we usually kept them anyway.

bogiefrommuskogee, Same here - new probation applies to all payrolls. But before the change from 90 days, I did hear about departments getting much more serious about probation periods, and I think that things have changed. If you come here misrepresenting your experience and know-how, I wouldn't expect a pass anymore. Aramco is getting very serious about probationary periods and good fits.

All,
I arrived in the kingdom on Wed Oct 21 and 2 days prior to me leaving I had to re-sign my contract so that it now stated the 180 day probation period and 60 day notice period. I am from Australia and on the global payroll so this effecting everyone.

I can testify 100% that this change applies to all payrolls. It is now officially 180 days for the probationary period, and that does not include holidays or short leaves taken during the first 180 days. They are really stepping up the effort to prevent people from staying that should have never been hired. During orientation last month I was told that just a few years ago it was unusual to see more than a couple people fail to make it to 90 days, but they said as of this year, they are expecting it to be well over 100 people just for the year of 2015. Add on top of that, the more unofficial notice that they have now frozen all additional hiring for 2016, and I think you can see where this is heading.

Personally I feel this is long overdue. It costs a lot of money to recruit and bring people here so nobody wants to see that wasted. But the reality is that it costs far more money to keep people here who cannot do their job and it puts far more workload on the rest of us. They take up office space, housing, schooling, head count all of which are in short supply. An expat who mistepresented themself and is not qualified to do the job should not be here.

Does this change applies to new hire? what about people already joined and under 90 days probation period right now, does this change policy applies to them as well?

The IR manual is not clear but, based on the cash-in-lieu repatriation paraph, EAP policy, home and car sale assistance, etc, my guess is that this will apply to personnel hired after November 1st. I cannot confirm that for probation, however but it would be consistent with past practice.
It is clear that probation will be taken much more seriously going forward with performance evaluation meetings occurring every 30 days or less during the probationary period.

The change in probationary period is not applicable to Aramco hires only. It is also applicable to hires in other organisations in KSA and is based on the change made to the Saudi Labour law in April 2015. The change had to be implemented 6 months after the date of publication which is the reason it is being implemented now.
It has been said that the aim is probation period under Saudi Labour Law to be consistent with regional market practice and also to ensure that both parties in an employment relationship have sufficient time to establish if the role is suitable, without penalty.
There are other changes as well such as a change to some Leave as follows:
Paternity leave: 1 to 3 calendar days Marriage leave: 3 to 5 calendar days Compassionate leave: 3 to 5 calendar days

The rule of thumb is that if you commenced with Aramco after October 18, 2015 then you will fall under the revised laws including the 180 day probation period. If you commenced before that date then the 90 day probation period applies.
