Has anyone flown Emirates since November 2014 with uhaul dish barrel boxes as checked baggage? If so, what was your experience? Did they charge excess baggage fees? I'll pay if I have to, but the website doesn't indicate what the fee might be.
According to the new policy, 59 linear inches is the maximum size without being assessed excess baggage fees. It seems that the uhaul dish barrel boxes are slightly larger.

Just cut the top down 2", I think it is. Usually I reach the 50lb weight limit before the box is full, so I'm cutting it down anyway. No problem on the airline.

Good idea, although most of them are already full  Emirates gives us up to 32kg, so it's easy to fill these boxes to the brim.
Sunday is supposed to be dedicated to repacking for the trip, so I should have ample time to cut them down if we have the space to spare.
Thanks!

I had also cut one of the two boxes two inches from the top but no one at the counter checked while checking in. I didn't find they thought it was a big deal. Maybe they've experienced it plenty before.

I went a bit different direction when I came over here. I bought these bags called Tote-A-Ton, from Samsonite. They weigh only one pound, and take up virtually no room. But surprisingly they held up well when I stuck a box inside. For the box I bought a regular sized home depot wardrobe box and trimmed it down to the acceptable size to fit in the bag (32.5x17x11.5). Then just filled it up, and zipped it up. It's technically a box, but looks like a bag. So no extra charges at all. But then again. I get 70 pounds per bag, and the size restriction on my airline was 62-inches. I'm glad I know about Emirates and their 59-inch rule. I'll avoid them in the future. Almost all my baggage exceeds that slightly... FYI... KLM, Delta, United, Lufthansa, and many others still give 62in(157-158cm) and 70lbs(32kg) for all business class flights or if you're a frequent flier member in any class. Pictures of my creation. (Note: I made 16 of these) -CT

FPEPRO - WOW, thanks for sharing, like your setup and now I got a project to do, not sure if I can improve it, but will definitively work on it once we get formal medical clearance.
