When we first arrived here, all in-camp repairs and services were provided by, or at least supervised by, the company. A few years ago, that stopped and all services were contracted out. There were actually some benefits to that. For example, if your AC failed requiring service, you no longer had to rush home and remove everything you had stored in the AC room before the Aramco supervisor came. Not that anyone stores anything in that room but I’m just speaking hypothetically. Any repairs that needed to be done were handled expeditiously and professionally before and later by the original contractors. Maybe it is just my perception but there seems to have been a significant change with the contractors.
Within the last six months, when our washing machine rusted and needed a replacement, we had to wait two months. When the dishwasher failed beyond repair, we had to wait three weeks for a replacement. Well our front door had some water damage. I was curious how a door could actually get water damage but one day I was at home when the gardener was cleaning outside and that little mystery was solved.
Anyhow, my wife called 939 and they came out to look at the door and decided it needed to be replaced. They took measurements about a week ago and, yesterday, they came with the new door. They taped down plastic sheeting both inside the house and outside where they would be cutting and planing. They brought the new door and carefully unwrapped it, took off the old door and began to work on the new door. Doorbell rings and I go to see what the issue is. Between his few words of English, many hand gestures and a tape measure, I come to the understanding that my old door is 83” tall and the new door is only 80” tall. So what he wants to know is whether I want the three inch gap to be between the top of the door and the frame or leave a three inch gap at the bottom between the door and the threshold. My first thought was it might be better to have the gap at the top so rats and mice would not have such easy entry. Since I have indoor cats, they would not be able to get out. Since it was my wife who was the one complaining about the old door, I left the decision to her. After several hours, we ended up with the old door reinstalled.
The one thing the supervisor was clear about was that my old door was not Aramco standard. Well it was the door that came with the house. I had not made any modifications either authorized or unauthorized so I didn’t understand how it could be non-standard. Does anyone know the SAES number for Aramco camp front doors? I intend to challenge this.
