We live in the main camp and have hard water or salt water throughout. I can feel the toll showering is taking on our hair. I'm going to take my first repat soon and was thinking to bring shower heads with filter, but do they work? Are people who still have salt water using them and do they help?
If worth it, can anyone suggest the best brand of filters? Also are there any shampoos available at the commissary that may be less damaging?

There are some showerhead water filters that work well. but realize you will likely need to change the filters about every 4-6 months. The difference is definitely significant! I use the Pelican Water Systems unit with the wand and there is negligible pressure drop and it does work. There are others out there and when you are looking be sure to see how much pressure drop there is; the Pelican one is nice since it sits fully on the showerheads and does not lower the showerheads height, although if this is an issue you can call housing to have the shower outlet raised if there is room.

Hi, I use the Pelican shower filter, too. I have not changed it in about 18 months. I tried a fresh one after about 3 months, as advised, but it didn't make a difference so I put back the original. Every once in a while I taste the shower water and it is similar in strength as when I put the filter on--it is salty, but much less so than the unfiltered sink faucet water. All this being said, I use swimmers shampoo (non-sulfate shampoo) and in all honesty THIS is what I think makes the difference. I haven't tried it without the filter, though, so I have no basis of comparison. My rule of thumb now is to monitor the texture of my (short) hair and if it starts to turn straw-like, then I know I need to change the shower head filter. Also, I've ordered this kind of shampoo online and it has come shipped with no leaking, damage, or anything. Hope this helps.

Sorry to say, but only reverse-osmosis membrane filtration or distillation will remove salt and other dissolved solids. The Pelican filter only removes chlorine (a dissolved gas).

There are shower heads and people are still using them to eliminate contaminants like chlorine as they cause damage. I would like to suggest you Aquasana Shower Filter which makes your hair shiner and skin softer.

I would check out SACO if they have anything, been in Maincamp for years and that was a complaint lack of fresh water... Another serious possibility that my family used was turning on the fresh water heater (in the circuit panel) and filling up a bucket of fresh water from the kitchen sweet water tap and using that to bathe.

Is it possible to install an RO system or a water softener for the house?

Can there be full home water filter? o, I arrived two days ago and am thinking of a filter now as well. Have you managed to sort this out for yourself? Thanks

Basing this on a conversation with a woman on camp who sells water filters, you cannot mess with the main line. You can add filters to the points of outlet, individually but not whole house.

Thanks a lot for the quick reply. Would you mind sending a PM with the lady who sells filters at the camp? Many thanks
