Hi,
My name is Beda and my husband received an offer from Aramco Dammam's building. Even when we are still waiting on visa to get through, we believe we are close to our relocation to the KSA from Australia. We have a boy in year one, one girl in kindy and a 1 year old baby. My question is about school terms. I believe the USA system has school year from September to June/July. However, in Australia school years are from January to November. Can anybody with a similar situation tell me about your experience? Do my kids will miss half a year of school or advance half a year? Which extra activities are in the compound?
Thanks

Hi Beda
The current school year (2014-15) started at the every end of August and finishes up at the end of June. The 2015-16 school year is scheduled to start at the end of August.
I'm friends with a few families who moved here from Australia, and in some cases, their kids advanced a year in the schools, but others did repeat. The school seems to have the incoming children take an assessment evaluation to help them place the kids in the grade level that's appropriate.

Usually, they would be placed based on their age. For kindergarten, the child must be 5 years old on or before August 31 of that school year. For 1st grade, the child would have to be 6 years old, etc.

Thanks crazycatlady and UmmRiyam for your reply... does anybody have any recommendation to help them settle into the school? I bet they are going to miss their school friends here. Sharing of your experience would be much appreciated.
Thanks

There is a good discussion on the differences between school curriculums on the post below: viewtopic.php?f=74&t=123378 As it points out, a child changing systems and going into a school year/grade number that is different from the one they would have expected to go into in their home country is not really being either held back or advanced - they are just moving into a different system.
