Hi, So we will be moving from UK in a few months insh and I was wondering what I should bring / not bring for the kids. I don't want to bring things that I can easily get in KSA. I have found lists on the FAQ's but those are general lists and not specific to kids.
So come on all parents, what did you wish you had brought from back home and what did you learn you didn't need to bring? Any tips / advice for anything kids related would be highly appreciated. For example, car seats, strollers/buggies, bedding, toys, clothing.
The kids bedding found in KSA is it 100% cotton? And what kids clothing shops are there in Dhahran/ Khobar? Can I find mothercare, next and H &M there?

Hi London girl, No kids with me but from what I have seen you will probably be able to get anything you need in KSA. Try viewing website for Dhahran and Rashid Mall as a starting point. Good luck

Bring a year worth of clothing, toys, even their oncoming b-day presents, we bring presents for future birthday parties that our children might be invited. I don't know prices in the UK but we buy from North America and prices here are so much higher, besides, not all the brands we like we can find.
Bedding is always good, tanning lotion, personal care brands that you like.
In any case, after you live here, you will see what you should bring after your first re-pat.
Good luck

Yes, we have Mothercare, Next, and H&M here in Saudi in most of the big malls. BUT the prices are higher, so I generally buy on sale. Actually H&M is priced pretty good all the time, but Mothercare really marks up the prices on many of the items. There are lots of places to buy kids clothes and shoes, but I still buy most of my kids' clothes and shoes from USA through shopping online or from the clearance racks when I visit.
Definitely bring car seats. Strollers/prams are more expensive here than USA..I don't know about UK prices...so I have brought my strollers over from USA since you can check the stroller for free when traveling with your infant/toddler.
I don't know anywhere to buy good bedding since Pottery Barn closed in Mall of Dhahran. IKEA has 100% cotton bedding, but choices are very limited. You can check the IKEA saudi website.
Toys...we buy most of our kids' toys from USA. We live in Udhailiyah, so we rarely go shopping anyways, so that's what works out best for us.

My view isn't as dire - we didn't need to bring a year's worth of clothing. We wouldn't have even been able to - the shops were stocking winter items when we moved! There is a host of familiar shops that stock children's apparel here: H&M, Mothercare (for wee ones), Gap, Gymboree, Pumpkin Patch, Monsoon, and there's a few more that I haven't checked out yet. Apparently, Old Navy is opening in the Mall of Dhahran. It's easy to find clothes for my younger kids, but my teenager is a little trickier (haven't decided if there are fewer options or if he's just picky). Yeah, things cost more, but they aren't a larger proportion of our income, so it's not worth panicking over, really.
I'm not sure if there is a wide assortment of bicycles for children here; the reports I've heard suggest that the selection isn't as broad as in my home country. We bought our kids new bikes before we moved so as to include them in our sea shipment.
We packed too many craft supplies. I needn't have stocked up; there's a good selection of craft supplies between Jarir's and Zamil's.
Most of my children's favourite brands of toiletries and sunscreen aren't available here, so bringing in some extra never hurts.
Toy-wise, there's Toys R Us, ELC, and Hamley's, but their selection isn't always what my kids are looking for compared to the shops back in Canada, so some items get put on their birthday wish-lists and such. I'd suggest bringing educational board games with you (I'll pass along the advice I received to leave the dice at home); the selection here is smaller and not as high-quality for sure.

No Peppa Pig stuff was the advice we got! Why no dice? Gambling potential? ?
