Is it true that the company who employs me will keep my passport? If so what happens when I want to go on holiday? I'm concerned as I have a holiday booked for May and it starts 1 week before my 3 months probation finishes, it was prebooked before I had the job offer, the recruiter was informed and sent me an email saying it was ok as aramco had approved it. How well am I to take them at their word over this?

I take it you are British? A lot of the agents miss treat other nationalities especially the indian/filipino workers, so they will try the same on with you too.
They cannot keep your passport if you ask for it back. But this is only half the battle, you need to get a exit/re-entry visa to leave and come back to the kingdom.
I have a good understanding with my agent so I get a multiple entry every 6 months, to come and go as I please.
As you haven't finished your probation its hard to say what will happen, I have heard of agents taking 15,000 SAR deposit from the employee and then issuing a visa. This was because a large group all went to Bahrain dumped their vehicles and didn't come back due to how their company was treating them.
I find it funny how they said Aramco approved your holiday, when you didn't even have an Aramco badge number or ID..... have you checked the SMP Leave system it will be listed there if its approved. If not get it in, and hope SMPCAD don't reject it because its before your probation let alone your 4 month contract leave constraint. (I take it your an SMP under the Support Services Contract)

I haven't even got to the training centre at ras tanura yet, I have been told I need my iqama before heading up there. I was told before I came here that the leave was ok otherwise I would never have started. Might be a problem.

lambretta225,
Iqama can take awhile to come through mine was 9 weeks. But most of the newer guys now get theirs in 2 weeks or less.
The agent will tell you anything to get you to sign the contract, they have milestones for signing the contract, passing probation period this is when the Agent gets his money.
The sponsor usually gets paid on the 4th month by Aramco for all expenses and your salary. (this is why they don't like you leaving the kingdom before then.)
We all get sold the dream, the reality is different though. Chin up and think of the money!
