My husband and oldest child are very much into photography (and pretty good at it, in my obviously biased opinion), and we're confused about whether there might be a problem with bringing our framed photos and photobooks (like the popular Shutterfly ones) with us.
We're unclear about whether a framed photo of our family members would be considered to be one of those depictions of humans/animals that are frowned upon or would it be different because the depiction is of our family (and pets, to be honest). Anyone have any useful advice/experience about whether the customs people would think that it's the same or that it's different?
(We are already aware that we're probably better off leaving irreplaceable stuff at home, but I'm looking for a different kind of info.)

No one can say 100% for certain, but odds are enormously in your favor that things would be 'ok'. In the 'old days' customs was very strict. Books, movies, even photos were scrutinized. Now days customs is usually like most other countries. They are looking for drugs, alcohol, pork, and similar banned substances but not nearly as concerned about photos and such (unless its obvious graphy).

After going through a couple weeks ago for the first time, we were thrilled that our photobooks made it and wished we'd brought more.
Seems to be similar experience to others we know who also came recently.

I don't think you have to worry about your family photographs.

Thank you for weighing in, everyone. My eldest kid has cheered up about moving quite a bit since I shared your experiences!

We had a few photos removed from our air shipment, but not the ones we thought might have been troublesome! No idea what the logic was. We didn't have any trouble with anything we hand carried. I would suggest having backups online or back home.

We brought all our family photos in our checked luggage.
If placed in your shipment, you could lose some. I always say do not bring anything that you would be brokenhearted if it was confiscated or dammaged.
Kids will need photos of themselves through the years for school projects.
If there are pictures you do not want to lose make copies and bring them.
