I'm planning to upgrade my spouse's prosumer DSLR and we expect to make the move to Saudi in about a month. The plan was to buy in the states where there appear to be more options and deals but then I discovered that when service is needed(perhaps just warranty service), major brands like Nikon require that you send your equipment back to the country where you bought it from. So we would either have to wait for a repat trip or ship the camera back to the US for service.
Checking the store websites in Khobar, retail prices appear to be a bit higher than retail in the US as well. (not a surprise, but I was curious if they'd turn out to be higher, the same, or less.
Can anyone comment on wether they buy in Saudi, wait to go home and if there is a shop that they prefer to work with? Do you see professional refurb equipment very often in the Dhahran area?

I bought my camera from USA. It was a lot cheaper. I haven't had any problems with it, so I've never had to send it in. You can usually find good deals around the holidays, either black friday or after.

It looks like it is only the warranty service that requires a camera to be sent back to its country of origin, not for simple maintenance issues. So shopping for deals in the US shouldn't prevent me from getting equipment serviced at the shops in Khobar.

I haven't had to have my camera serviced, but bought it at the Nikon Store on Dhahran Road in Khobar. Friends have also bought their cameras there.

I brought my Canon 40D and 3 lenses with me but I don't really think I'll use it.
However, I learned today that there are adult classes here in digital photography (Community Education). They include day trips, too. So as soon as I get moved to Dhahran I might take one to get some formal learning in photography.
If I don't do that, then I may just sell my gear. The Aramco Classifieds is a neat place to buy and sell used stuff.
