Hi,
Just trying to get organised for our impending move, albeit that we do not yet know where we are being housed (hoping either Dhahran or Rakah) :?
Just a couple of questions:
* Are the bed sizes US standard sizes or UK? i.e. a standard US single bed is 99 cm × 191 cm, whereas in the UK it's 91 cm × 191 cm. Also, are the double beds queen sized or king? Again, US or UK sizes?
* Generally speaking are all the dining tables in various compounds the same size? I would like to buy an oilcloth table cover, but am not sure what length I will need and if there is a big difference in the sizes across the different compounds.
That's it for now (I think)

I don't know about Rakah, but in the Aramco compound (from furniture warehouse), I believe the bed sizes are American sizes. The double bed is like a full sized bed, which is smaller than a Queen sized bed.
The dining table that furniture warehouse has is oval and not very big. I think it seats 4 people. I would recommend just waiting until you get here to buy a tablecloth. You may want to buy your own dining table instead of using the one provided.

Hi,
I am moving to Al Rakah next month and I was also wondering about the beds. Specifically, what type of mattress is provided? We have read that the bed is US standard king size but haven't seen anything about what type of mattress it is (e.g., foam, latex, spring, hybrid).
We are currently considering whether we should buy a mattress here and ship it or whether the provided mattress would be suitable for our preferences (we prefer foam or latex).
Any advice would be highly appreciated! Thanks!

o all,
I can speak to Rakah furniture, as my wife and just moved here last week, on Saay the 18th of October. First off, everything in Rakah is the same. Each villa is 2,367 sq feet, two stories, with 3 bedrooms and 3 full bathrooms upstairs; the bedrooms each are off from a central bonus room which you walk into at the top of the stairs, kind of like a smaller living room. Downstairs, you have a large living room and dining room on one side, and a good sized kitchen with 4 bar stool height chairs that snug nicely under the counter. The kitchen has plenty of cabinet and drawer space. Off the kitchen is the laundry room, which is also connected to the dining room (open the kitchen door to the laundry room, go to the other door, open it, and you'll see the living room). Behind the kitchen is a separate room and very small bathroom/shower room (this is the maid's quarters/living area); my wife and I don't need a maid or other kind of domestic help, so we use this room for general stoe).
Ok, to the furniture. The dining table provided is oval shaped, and has two inserts that allow you to seat 8 people (3 on each side, 1 on each end). Fully elongated, the dining room table will require a table cloth size of around 60" W x"102-120" L, as its approximately 48" wide and 96 or so inches long. If you collapse it and remove the leafs, you would need a smaller sized table linen of course.
The beds: One standard American King in the master, an American Full in the second bedroom, and two twins/singles in the third bedroom. Mattress type is standard spring mattress on a a typical boxspring in each bedroom. My wife and I shipped all of our furniture and belongings from the US to KSA (can't wait for that stuff to arrive).
Regarding the Rakah furniture, am told we get to keep the provided furniture for the first 4 months of occupancy, then we will have to rent the furniture from Aramco should we wish to keep it. My wife and moved here form Washington DC, from an 800 sq ft condo, so we intend on renting some of the furniture items to round out all the rooms, and will likely purchase a piece or two if necessary on the local economy (there is an IKEA here, along with other furniture stores).

bburke73,
This is an interesting point. As far as I am aware almost all residents have their furniture "rent-free" as a perk of being on Rakah. I am curious as to whether this has changed across the board or just for new residents now coming in.
As another point the furniture provided is not terribly practical and the style is very old-fashioned. There are a lot of pieces such as tables which fill the space, but don't offer any stoe. The kitchen, which is seemingly large with lots of cupboards soon filled up as our shipment arrived and we came from 100sq m London apartment. No bookshelves either.
If you like modern style furniture, Ikea etc I recommend you ship it. There is an Ikea over here but they are often out of stock of popular items.
