We will be arriving near the end of Oct and I want to be sure I bring the proper clothing for my children. I have searched the site, but can not find specific info regarding school dress codes. Do the middle schoolers have to wear long pants each day or are shorts acceptable? Collared shirts? What are the Dhahran school colors? Are there specific requirements for PE? Music concerts?
Thank you for your assistance!

There is no formal dress code, children just have to abide by the "normal" rules of modesty in regards to clothing, much as adults do on camp, at least in official buildings.

Kids wear shorts and shirts every day to school. Older kids in middle school buy a PE shirt and shorts. Just like PE back home in the US, except there seems to be a real focus here on having the kids to actual exercises, and not just playing games all the time. My son really enjoys his PE class and music as well.

From 5th grade, the kids cannot wear short shorts/skirts...they must be at least 2-3 inches from the knee. Other than that, probably the same as most schools...of course no short shirts either showing the stomach.
Also, UDH school sent a note about shoes...kids shouldn't wear flip flops, or other beach type shoes. I think that includes crocs. but my daughter (Kindergarten) has PE 3 days a week, so she wears tennis shoes on those days.

UmmRiyam,
I'm doing back-to-school shopping for SAES now, and I was wondering if someone could clarify this information for me. So, no skirts and shorts for kids in the fifth grade and above? Or they are okay as long as they are around knee-length? There's another reply in this thread that gives shorts and skirts the green light, so this is confusing!

They can wear shorts and skirts, but not too short. maybe that part of the dress code isn't strictly enforced, but it was mentioned in the email sent to the parents in UDH.
Use your judgement as a parent, understanding that Saudi Arabia is a conservative country.

Good to know; thank you. Sounds like the current standards for where my kids go to school.
