o everyone, Just to bring everyone`s attention on the news i was informed from gulf news. It happened recently, actually on 2nd of Sep on the eastern province, "where a saudi pipeline wa on a security patrol" (!!) "A small fire erupted in a gas pipeline in Saudi Arabia’s Eastern Province on Tuesday after unidentified assailants shot at a security patrol, Saudi security and oil industry sources said. The Saudi security source said the fire started after a “stray” bullet hit the pipeline after shots were fired at security forces patrolling the oil-rich Eastern Province" Excuse me but do we need to worry about it or what??? Has anyone heard of something? gulfnews.com/news/gulf/saudi-ara ... -1.1379793 thank you

My 2 cents-
I remember a pipeline was "hit" by a hunter in Alaska years ago. Due to the pressure in the pipeline, the plume of oil that escaped the very small hole was impressive enough to be detected by a patrol aircraft from above. I don't remember it being a major problem to repair.
Too me, its amazing that this doesn't happen more often given the runs of pipe across vast stretches of dessert in such a large middle eastern country.
The Saudis have the means and every incentive to keep the facilities secure and the employees comfortable, but you can't plan for every possible problem and only you can decide how safe you feel.

Bullet strikes on the the Trans-Alaska Pipeline are not uncommon. Most times I think they hit the insulation jacket and don't really damage the pipe. The bullet strike Shammal refers to happened some years back and was caused by a drunken man with a high power rifle firing directly at the pipeline at close range trying to damage it. The small diameter of the hole and the pressure in the pipe caused a pretty large plume of oil to spray out.
Since then, they actually have created an emergency "bullet clamp" that can clamp over a bullet hole and keep the oil in the pipe.

If you want to worry about a stray bullet hitting a pipeline, then that is your prerogative. However, as others have mentioned, such incidents can (and do) happen all over the world.

I do not know anywhere in the world you can be guaranteed safety or that nothing will ever happen.
No matter where you live, you should be aware of your surroundings whenever you are out and about.
