dimk,
I have been here only for two weeks, but I already feel this was a good move. Work environment I would say is really professional, locals don't make you feel like the invasor, they just want to make you part of the team. The camp is enormous, with a lot of things to do. I have to admit that the heat is tough but I heard it gets better toward the end of September. The city is, as per my opinion, a regular city, with different rules, but I just got back from the mall with the family and we are exhausted as it is huge, with the same brands that you could find in any mall anywhere (but more luxurious). The restaurants are really good, and you have almost all kind of restaurants from local food to italian, indian, american but not canadian... as canadian food is pretty much based on bacon and that is a no no here. I am waiting for my iqama to experience Bahrain. But in general a great life style.

dimk, living cost here is very affordable, I have found that it will depends on you life style and choices. For example yesterday I went to the Tamimi supermarket (it is safeway) and I made an experiment, I bought 3 avocados from Kenya for the same price I paid for 1 from US, and will taste them both and decide if we want to spend more on imported goods or if the stuff from the MENA region are good enough. What I want to share is that you have options to manage your budget and you life style. Food in general is not expensive, I have not bought clothing but electronics I would say they are pretty similar price than in my previous "home" (Canada), especially because GST here is none.
By the way you gotta promise me once you get here you will come over to help me set up a super internet lab at home  as I live in Dhahran Tower and internet here is not working at a great speed.

Nemo, thats good news to hear about costs.it depends on the lifestyle for sure but i am the kind of person who is a bit conservative and spend for the necessary. so you live in DT? how is living there for families or for couples? are there things to do? or what about safety there compared to the other compounds? it is something i am really concerned about.how many apartments are currently free in DT? well, it would be challenging for me to enhance internet speed on the tower!
