Looking for some suggestions. Been to LuLu, Tamimi and Hyper Panda - all seem to have an OK selection of bulk spices and fair (my assessment) assortment of coffee. Are there any places in Khobar or Dammam such as spice and/or coffee markets? And if so - where are they located.
On another topic - suggestions for musical instrument retailers - electric guitars, strings, accessories, etc?
Thanks.

Musical Instruments: Yamaha store in the Al Rashid Mall. Yamaha store in Khobar souq area on King Khalid Street somewhere between Dhahran Road and 2nd cross. I think it is between A cross and 1 st, but not sure.

Madison84,
(Is your handle based on UW Madison? If so, I would be Madison80!)
Another place for bulk spices & coffee is Danube - it's on the north side of Khobar, a bit in from the Cornish - should show up in a Google maps search. Quite a few varieties of coffee. Also note that Tamimi sometimes has green coffee beans - we roast our own to the roast we like. Best done outside though - messy & smokey.
There's supposed to be a bulk seed store in Thuqbah neighborhood on Makah street that has a large selection of coffee too. I haven't been to it yet, but intend to go once the weathers starts to cool off in October.

I was going to throw some 5# packs of my favorite coffee in my checked luggage and ebox shipment, and hope it gets through Customs. It's great to hear there are some decent sources for coffee though, so it's not such a concern for me anymore. Wutz - roasting the green beans sounds pretty cool. I'll have to try it. Is it like smoking fish outside? Tom

Thanks for the info Wutz. I have since had Danube recommended although not been. I did hit Carrefour on Saay and that was OK for coffee. Also - their meat department looked pretty good although I did not buy as I was still out and about for a bit and did not need it to cook before I got it home. Now if I can just get my hands on a bulk quany of the "Persian" saffron all will be well in my kitchens.
As far as the moniker.....I could be a trendy 30 year old female whose parents named me that after seeing the Tom Hanks movie "Splash" or a 50 year old from the Madison university named for the President...I'll let you have think on that one.
Thanks.

Tom, Not really like smoking fish. Coffee needs to reach high internal temperatures to roast. I think it may be based on the Maillard reaction similar to browning baked bread. So I use a stainless steel pan on the side burner of my gas grill and roast past 'first crack' (roasting coffee makes a sound almost like popcorn popping -twice. First crack is relatively light roast. Second crack is much darker - almost espresso roast. Past second crack is very dark and quite bitter). Coffee fresh roasted can be better than you'll ever get out of a bag. Roasting is fun, but makes a lot of smoke, and hulls that flake off the beans are very light and blow everywhere.

Madison84,
I'm pretty sure that the Commissary at Al Mujama in DHA sells Persian saffron. It's in the shelves behind the bulk nuts counter. I haven't tried it yet, as I brought in a big bunch of Spanish saffron when we first came.
