Finally travelling next Sunday, June 29th. Although not official yet, I should be in Ar-Rakah, instead of Dhahran and I will be glad to meet new hires but not only when I am in place. I like biking for shorter or longer distances and have a mountain bike for that usage, which I am using also on normal roads. In one ARAMCO brochure they display a picture of a biker with such a bike in a natural surrounding. Considering the environment, I am wondering about the possibility to use a bike for convenience and more, but still need to check if the frame fits into an E-Box, so that I could have it with me in the second half of August and use it instead of walking or may be taking busses and taxis for short distances. Any bikers at ARAMCO and in the communities? Are there cycle stores? How is it like with paths available for leisure biking? is the environment not too sandy? what about the risk of riding on roads for longer rides? Is that feasible to ride to work and take a shower in the office?

There are bike riders inside Aramco camps. There is a bicycle activites group in DHA and you could join them. Many ride street bikes, you would be riding on the streets of DHA. There is the jebal area of DHA where you could ride your mountain bike. There are trails in the jebal area of DHA that the dirt bikers use and you could use.
If you live in Rakah and work in DHA, you will not ride your bike to work. You could bring it to work with you by putting it in the stoe space under the bus and use it around the DHA camp if you wanted to.
You would not want to ride outside the Aramco camps on the roads, too dangerous. Maybe, a big maybe, you could ride very early on Friday mornings when not much traffic.
There are bicycle shops here in Khobar. There is a limited selection of brands, mostly TREK and mostly mountain bikes. Limited style available.

Atactic,
It is 113F today in Dhahran. I am arriving at Rakkah on Monday morning. It will take me a few days to reassemble my bike. It is not a bad distance from Dhahran to Rakkah, but I am not so sure the drivers are paying too much attention. They seem to drive larger cars and trucks too. Perhaps it is just the fear instilled in me by the friends that showed me around last summer. But one of them did get into a serious car accident a few months ago in the Dhahran compound with another expatriate. Since there is a bike group there, they must have some strategy to avoid death. PM me if you want to hunt down a bike shop.

I do not know about child seats. But there is a bike parts store. You may want to bring in spare inner tubes until you know they carry the ones for your bike.

Is there any road or mountain riding in or around abqaiq? I am contemplating bringing a bike but have no clue what kind of terrain to expect. Hard or soft tail? 29er? cross bike or road bike? Any suggestions or information would be helpful.
