My husband arrived in KSA May 31st - originally he was placed in Abqaiq bachelor housing. As my daughter and I arrive July 11 with 2 pets in tow this obviously could not be a long term home! Although he liked ABQ and we thought we would be given a house there, he wasn't keen on the one hour plus bus commute from ABQ to Dhahran - although the buses are rather comfy.
He was told we would be moving to Dhahran...what a surprise! But we quickly learned that Dhahran meant Dhahran Towers. At first we were both frustrated and disappointed (what do we do with a labrador retriever in an apartment? not to mention we have a shipment of household good enroute and the apartments are fully furnished!) I remember waking up in the middle of the night thinking "I'm going to be trapped in an apartment in a foreign country")
As we learned more about DH Towers we both became more comfortable with the idea. I'm a chef and a photographer - I'm getting a 5 burner gas stove and lots of natural light! The pool, jacuzzis, sauna and fitness room are only 24 flights of stairs away - who needs a fitness centre?! Weekly cleaning service is included in the low rent. Parking looks great - hubby has just arranged to purchase a vehicle from a retired Aramcon. This will allow us the explore the community - and get the 13 year old fashionista to the malls!
He moved in exactly one week ago today. Most evenings he facetimes me (internet is great at the Tower) and I get to watch the sun pop over the horizon of the Persian Gulf! For his birthday I researched local restaurants and arranged for him to go for breakfast at LeMeridien hotel cafe and Sanbok seafood restaurant for dinner (both in Al Khobar). He claims it was the best seafood dinner he has ever had!
I asked ...but what about grocery shopping? "Oh you will love Danube" he says. Well just google Danube Al Khobar and look at the images....I'm sure to find everything I need here. Flyer prices look comparable to home.
Husband says that people are moving into the Tower everyday and no one is complaining. The commute to Dhahran is only 15 minutes (takes bit longer to office if going by bus due to transfers). He says "almost everyone I meet has a 13 year old daughter!" Wow! Couldn't ask for more than that. It's hard to say goodbye to friends at home but knowing there will be new friends to make by the pool or just down the hall provides some relief.
If anyone wishes to PM message me I can give more info and can certainly connect you directly to hubby who is on the ground (well not really, he's on the 29th floor!) and can also answer questions.
If you are on your way to DH Towers we look forward to meeting you!
